About the role
We are seeking a Principal Advisor, Communications & Brand, Copper Americas for a 12-month Fixed -term parental leave cover to Lead delivery of brand and marketing communications for Copper Americas through the execution of strategic communications plans with emphasis on activating and managing corporate sponsorships agreements at Utah and US level; responsible for fulfilling sponsorship agreements for Rio Tinto Kennecott.
Reporting to the Senior Communications Manager for Rio Tinto’s Copper group in the Americas, you will:
- Support delivery of communications campaigns to engage and inform employees, communities and the public in relation to Kennecott, Resolution and broader Copper Operations portfolio; support content development for internal and external channels as needed, collaborating across assets, functions, Product Groups and Group
- Partner with Kennecott, Resolution Copper and other Copper Operations teams such as Nuton and Chile to elevate Copper profile in Americas while ensuring alignment on messaging and branding; connecting where necessary on the business’s broader US and Americas strategy goals (ex-Copper).
- Acting as a key Rio Tinto brand champion for the region; ensuring alignment with Group brand and reputation strategy, standards and best practice.
- Responsible for the end-to-end management of company events including, but not limited to: employee engagement events, media/press events, customer events, off-site and industry conferences and brand-building events.
- Establish strategy, approach and calendar for events and brand-building opportunities in line with Copper Americas business priorities and objectives; bring cross-functional teams together to execute and support events.
- Research and assess partnership opportunities within the Salt Lake Valley community which will benefit Kennecott and Copper Operations, while ensuring alignment to RT values and RTK business objectives.
- Develop and design branded event collateral, invitations, and other marketing materials; maintain inventory of company swag as required; ensure that partnership marketing material and initiatives are consistent and on brand.
- Serve as brand ambassador and champion for Copper Operations & Kennecott, taking an active role in being visible in the community, representing the company and supporting tours on-site as required.
- Support Copper Operations leadership positioning and profiling – e.g. social media, events and platforms; support engagement with relevant trade bodies, forums; support issues tracking, management and crisis management.
What you’ll bring

- Senior experience (7+ years) in corporate communications, employee communications and reputation management. Extractive or industrial company experience a plus, but not essential.
- Advanced knowledge of local and regional media network and landscape.
- A proven track record of leading, supporting, and developing a team.
- Experience delivering integrated communications across a variety of channels and audiences
- A marketing-driven mindset with strategic planning experience and a personal commitment to innovation and continuous improvement.
- Excellent written and spoken language skills, with sharp attention to detail and the ability to tailor complex information for a breadth of audiences.
- Strong interpersonal and influencing skills, high emotional intelligence and cultural awareness.
- Ability to work flexibly, accommodating occasional evening, weekend and holiday hours.
- University degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or a related field.
