About the role:

We are looking for a Health and Safety Manager Mine Operations to join our team in Guinea developing the Simandou Project. Working with the Simandou Project team provides the opportunity to be part of one of the most exciting mining developments in the industry. As part of this unique mega project, you will contribute to something significant and learn and develop both personally and professionally. We offer a collaborative, high performing environment where success is achieved by working together.

You will develop and execute the plan for health and safety operational readiness for mining and work closely with the construction team through commissioning into operations.

You will build capacity, tools, and best practices as part of a supportive and collaborative team in an area of high importance and develop your influencing skills by working in a cross-functional team, including Corporate Areas of Expertise for Safety and Health, site-based HS teams, and with site leadership.

Reporting to the General Manager HSE, you will:

  • Manage a cross functional team of professionals across the disciplines of safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, medical, fire rescue and emergency response for operations.

  • Lead the health and safety operational readiness work stream and deliver in accordance with project milestones.

  • Prepare annual plans, manage budgets and contract manage health and safety service providers.

  • Plan and implement health and safety programmes to meet strategic priorities in line with Rio Tinto and international standards and the HSE Integrated Management System (IMS).

  • Lead the implementation of Critical Risk Management (CRM), the Safety Maturity Model (SMM) and compliance to Rio Tinto Safety and Health Standards for operations.

  • Lead the process for effective learning from incidents including quality investigations and governance of corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.

  • Develop capability of the team with a strong focus on succession planning.

  • Build strong relationships and communicate effectively across the different HSE workstreams, other functions, employees, site management, contracting partners, joint venture partners and corporate areas of excellence.

  • Perform additional duties as directed by leadership from time to time.

What you’ll bring:

  • University degree in health, safety, engineering or related field, or related discipline.

  • 10-15 years' experience in mining, preferably operations

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and the team.

  • Demonstrated experience in leadership roles, building capability in teams and in-field coaching.

  • Experience in project management and working across different teams to achieve results.

  • Confidence to lead with the principles of everyday respect, inclusivity and psychological safety

  • Ability to work in fast-paced, challenging environments and manage multiple priorities effectively.

  • Effective communication skills, including superior written and verbal communication skills (English and French preferred).

  • High level of self-initiative but also comfortable asking for help when needed.

  • Solutions-oriented, continuous improvement, and creative approach.

  • Ease with IT-based data management software and communication skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.)

À propos du Projet Simandou Sud

Le projet de minerai de fer de Simandou (Blocs 3 & 4) est situé en République de Guinée, en Afrique de l'Ouest. Il s’agit d’un gisement de minerai de fer de haute qualité et de classe mondiale et représente l'une des plus grandes réserves connues de minerai de fer au monde.

Le projet Simandou Sud opère dans le cadre de la coentreprise Simfer où le gouvernement de Guinée détient 15 %, Rio Tinto et Chinalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH) , qui détiennent respectivement 45,05 % et 39,95 % de Simandou, continuent de travailler avec le gouvernement Guinéen pour explorer les options permettant de valoriser le gisement de minerai de fer de Simandou, ainsi que des mécanismes potentiels de collaboration sur les infrastructures requises au développement du Projet et aux opérations minières.

Votre milieu de travail

Le projet est détenu par Simfer S.A., coentreprise entre Rio Tinto (45,05 %), Chinalco (39,95 %) et le gouvernement de la Guinée (15 %). Rio Tinto est l’exploitant désigné des blocs 3 et 4 de Simandou. Ces blocs, situés dans les montagnes de Simandou, représentent l’un des plus importants gisements inexploités de minerai de fer à haute teneur actuellement, avec des ressources indiquées dépassant 1,7 milliard de tonnes.   

La mine créera plusieurs milliers d’emplois directs et indirects, avec une valeur économique se chiffrant dans les milliards de dollars au cours de sa durée de vie estimée. Simandou sera également un moteur de croissance économique et s’appuiera sur les meilleures pratiques en vue d’assurer un milieu de travail sûr, durable et respectueux de l’environnement. Le minerai de fer issu de la mine sera utilisé pour fabriquer des produits essentiels dont la société moderne dépend, notamment des véhicules électriques, des infrastructures d’énergie renouvelable, des immeubles et des ponts.
