We are looking for a Senior Tailings Engineer who possesses strong technical knowledge and troubleshooting skills to join our Growth & Innovation team. The role is focused on providing and supporting the longer-term strategy for IOC’s Tailings facility. The role will be responsible for ensuring tailings and water facility are operated safely and efficiently in compliance with all external and internal requirements and in alignment with the Tailings Management Plan. The role can be based in either of our four locations (Labrador City, Montreal, Sept-Îles or St. John’s). Please note that this is a temporary, maternity leave replacement.

This role is a great opportunity to contribute to the organization’s safety and profitability while developing as a technical expert. Reporting to the Principal Advisor Processing Growth & Innovation and working in an exciting and unique environment within the Iron Ore Company of Canada, you will:

  • Support health, safety, environmental, and quality (HSEQ) programs by assisting in their implementation, ensuring compliance with corporate policies and regulatory requirements.

  • Ensure tailings operations fully comply with Rio Tinto's D5 tailings management standard and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), as well as environmental approvals and other internal and external requirements.

  • Work closely with operational teams to align tailings facility management with design intent, long-term strategy, and operations and maintenance plans, keeping compliance with D5 and GISTM at the forefront.

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to monitor facility performance, address potential risks, and support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance compliance and operational efficiency.

  • Manage statutory and internal reporting requirements, ensuring timely and accurate submissions related to tailings management.

  • Provide technical support and guidance on capital projects related to tailings facilities, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and corporate standards.

  • Analyze operational data and trends to identify opportunities for process optimization and risk mitigation

  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource on site, supporting teams in understanding and implementing best practices in tailings management.

What you’ll bring

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Metallurgical, Process, Chemical, Geotechnical or Civil

  • 7 – 10 years’ experience in an industrial environment with a requirement for experience in concentration of valuable minerals

  • The ability to interface effectively with operations personnel at all levels

  • Ability to work independently with little direction

  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable to communicate complex technical issues with senior management

It is also beneficial if you have:

  • Familiar with regulatory framework applicable to tailings operations in Canada

  • Experience in pumping, thickening, earthen embankment, and structures

  • Experience in executing large capital projects

  • If you are applying for the role based in Sept-Iles or Montreal, Quebec, fluency in French and English, both written and spoken. Rio Tinto is a global company and the duties of this position may require collaboration with colleagues, teams or partners based outside Quebec

Where you’ll be working

We are a leading North American producer and exporter of premium iron ore pellets and high-grade concentrate with average iron grades greater than 66%. With a team of over 2,700 employees, IOC is committed to providing value and continuity for our customers, employees, communities and shareholders through our unique mine to port approach, taking advantage of our full integration and wholly owned infrastructure to deliver our high-quality concentrate and pellets to our customers across the globe.  ​

IOC’s operations include a mine with five operational pits, a concentrator and a pelletizing plant located near Labrador City in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.  We also operate a wholly-owned 418 km railway, the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway (QNS&L), that links our Labrador operations to Company-owned port facilities in Sept-Iles. ​

La personne titulaire du poste sera responsable de l’exploitation sécuritaire et efficace du parc à résidus miniers et de la gestion de l’eau, conformément aux exigences réglementaires externes et internes, dans le cadre du plan de gestion des résidus miniers. Elle exercera ses fonctions à Labrador City, à Sept-Îles, à Montréal ou à St. John’s. Veuillez noter qu’il s’agit d’un poste temporaire, de remplacement de congé de maternité.

Relevant du conseiller principal ou de la conseillère principale, Opérations de traitement, Croissance et Innovation, la personne titulaire du poste travaillera dans un environnement stimulant unique au sein de la Compagnie minière IOC et aura les responsabilités suivantes :

  • Veiller au soutien des programmes de santé, sécurité, environnement et qualité (SSEQ) en assurant leur mise en œuvre et leur conformité avec les politiques d’entreprise et les exigences réglementaires.

  • Appuyer la mise en œuvre de la Norme de Rio Tinto D5 sur la Gestion des installations de stockage des résidus et des eaux et de la Norme industrielle mondiale dans la gestion des résidus miniers (GISTM) : obtenir les approbations environnementales et se conformer aux autres exigences internes et externes.

  • Collaborer étroitement avec les équipes opérationnelles pour que la gestion du parc à résidus miniers s’harmonise avec l’intention de la conception, la stratégie à long terme et les plans d’exploitation et de maintenance, tout en veillant à ce que la conformité aux normes D5 et GISTM demeure la priorité.

  • Collaborer avec les principales parties prenantes pour effectuer la surveillance de la performance du site, atténuer les risques et soutenir les initiatives d’amélioration continue visant une meilleure gestion de la conformité et de l’efficacité opérationnelle.

  • Satisfaire aux exigences réglementaires en matière de rapports et de déclarations internes, afin de respecter la soumission de données précises et en temps opportun visant la gestion des résidus miniers.

  • Donner du soutien et de l'assistance technique à toutes les étapes du cycle de vie des projets d'investissement liés à la gestion des résidus miniers, en accord avec les meilleures pratiques de l’industrie et les normes d’entreprise.

  • Analyser les données et les tendances opérationnelles afin de repérer les occasions d’optimisation des processus et d’atténuation des risques.

  • Agir à titre de personne-ressource sur place, pour aider les équipes à saisir l’importance des meilleures pratiques et leur adoption dans la gestion des résidus miniers.

Votre contribution

  • Baccalauréat en génie (métallurgique, des procédés, chimique, géotechnique ou civil)

  • De 7 à 10 années d’expérience dans le secteur industriel, notamment avec expérience dans le domaine des dépôts de minéraux de grande valeur

  • Capacité d’interagir facilement avec le personnel de l’exploitation à tous les niveaux

  • Autonomie, capable de travailler de manière indépendante

  • Solides compétences en engagement des parties prenantes 

  • Solides compétences en communication orale et écrite. Facilité à vulgariser des problèmes techniques complexes auprès de la direction.

Atouts

  • Bonne connaissance du cadre réglementaire de l’exploitation des résidus miniers au Canada

  • Expérience des exigences liées au pompage de l’eau, à l’épaississement, aux digues et aux structures de retenue

  • Expérience en gestion de projets d’investissement en capital de grande envergure

  • Si vous postulez pour le poste basé à Sept-Îles ou à Montréal, Québec, la maîtrise du français et de l'anglais, à l'oral comme à l'écrit, est requise. Undergo assessments

Our assessments are designed to help us work out whether you are suitable for the role. We will let you know which ones you’ll need to complete.

Interview(s)

Our interviews could be in person or online. It’s a great opportunity for us to get to know you a bit better, answer any of your questions and talk about the exciting career opportunity you have applied for.

Offers and checks

At this stage, we will let you know if you have been successful. If you have been, we’ll need to conduct a couple of checks, such as a background or security check. You may also need to do a medical assessment. depending on the role. you have applied for.

Once the checks have been completed, we’ll be in touch to talk with you about your start date and answer any questions you may have before you start with us.
