About the role

We are looking for a Process Operator to contribute to the success of a safe, reliable, and efficient coke calcining operation. In this role, you will monitor, control, and optimize the production process while ensuring the safe operation of equipment and maintaining product quality across the plant.

The work is performed on a 12-hour rotating shift roster that generally follows a 4-on/4-off pattern. As this is a continuous operation, the schedule is floating and includes a combination of day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.

This is a great opportunity for a safety-focused and mechanically inclined individual to build on existing industrial, manufacturing, or equipment operating experience while developing a rewarding career in process operations. Through a structured training program, you will gain exposure to both yard and board operator responsibilities, expanding your technical skills and operational knowledge. The role includes a variety of physically demanding activities and requires a reasonable level of physical fitness.

Reporting to the Supervisor, you will be:

• Actively contributing to a safety-first culture by identifying hazards, speaking up, and supporting safe work practices across the team
• Responding to non-routine operating conditions and emergency situations, initiating emergency response procedures in accordance with established protocols.
• Operating large wheel loaders, rail equipment, forklifts, skid steers, and other mobile equipment to support plant operations.
• Loading and unloading inbound raw materials and outbound finished product rail cars while coordinating the safe and efficient movement of rail traffic on site.
• Conducting routine process inspections, identifying abnormalities, monitoring equipment and process health, and taking appropriate action to maintain safe and stable operations.
• Maintaining accurate operational records and logbooks, ensuring effective communication during shift handovers and day-to-day operations.
• Supporting maintenance activities, including the servicing of mobile and stationary equipment, while maintaining high standards of housekeeping across work areas and equipment.
• Working safely and effectively both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating respectful communication and collaboration with colleagues.

About you

• A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
• A high school diploma (or GED), a valid provincial driver's licence, and the ability to successfully complete required safety training and mobile equipment certifications.
• Previous experience working in an industrial, manufacturing, construction, or other safety-sensitive environment.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, equipment troubleshooting abilities, and basic math skills, including working with decimals and percentages.
• The physical ability to perform manual tasks such as lifting up to 50 lb., using hand tools, shovelling, sweeping, and loading or unloading materials.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the flexibility to work a rotating schedule that includes day and night shifts.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

• Journeyperson status in a mechanical trade
• Experience with Lean Six Sigma
• Industrial Railways Operating (IROR) certification

Rio Tinto’s Strathcona Production Plant is a part of the Atlantic Operations of the Aluminum product group.

Our Alberta facility is focused on results and for over 50 years we have been playing a part of the global aluminum industry. This facility is responsible for turning byproducts from oil refineries into key ingredients for one of our widely used metals. High quality green petroleum coke (GPC) is purchased from our partners and turned it into anode grade calcined coke for use in the aluminum smelting process.
