We’re Finding Better Ways™ to provide materials the world needs, now and in the future. Our values – care, courage and curiosity – guide how we work and how we treat each other.
Resource Development provides an opportunity to work across a broad and varied operational environment. Rather than focusing on a single production activity, our supervisors may support programs involving drilling, earthworks, geophysics, rehabilitation, water drilling and test pumping, while collaborating with technical and operational teams across the business.
About the role
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Field Operations Supervisor to join our Resource Development Operations team within Rio Tinto Iron Ore.
This is an exciting frontline leadership opportunity for someone who enjoys leading people, working in a dynamic field environment, and delivering safe, high-quality operational outcomes.
As a Field Operations Supervisor, you will provide leadership in the safe execution of Resource Development activities at a site level. You will lead and develop a diverse operational team while working closely with our contractor partners and technical teams to safely deliver work aligned to the short-term operational plan.
Working on an 8/6 day shift only FIFO roster, you will be part of a supportive leadership team committed to your development and growth.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong safety leadership, clear communication, and the ability to lead teams in a dynamic operational environment where priorities can change quickly.
Reporting to the Superintendent Operations you will:
- Lead, coach and develop your team, creating an environment where people feel supported, accountable, and empowered to perform at their best.
- Provide visible safety leadership in the field, effective risk management and environmentally responsible work practices.
- Coordinate and safely execute work aligned to the two-week operational plan, ensuring safety, productivity and quality expectations are achieved each shift.
- Work closely with contractor partners involved in activities such as drilling and earthworks to support safe and effective field execution.
- Manage the day-to-day people leadership requirements of your team, including performance, behaviour, development and leave planning.
- Actively promote, communicate, and role‑model positive safety culture and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate closely with internal functions and key stakeholders to achieve operational goals.
- Manage incidents and operational issues in a timely, effective, and professional manner.
What you’ll bring
- A strong background in safety and people leadership
- Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and develop people
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with teams and stakeholders
- Operational or technical experience within resource definition, field operations, drilling, earthworks, surface mining or a similar environment
- The ability to coordinate multiple operational priorities in a fast-moving field environment
- Strong interpersonal and organisational capability
- Confidence working across internal teams and contractor partners
- Good computer literacy, including proficiency across Microsoft applications.
- Strong understanding of compliance requirements, policies and procedures
You don't need to have done everything before.
What matters most is that you are a visible, genuine, and safety-focused leader who enjoys being in the field, supporting people and creating an environment where teams can safely succeed.
If you're someone who builds strong relationships, sets clear expectations, develops others and isn't afraid to step in and help solve operational challenges, we'd like to hear from you.
What we offer
Be recognised for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you’ve helped the world progress.
- A work environment where safety is always the number one priority
- A permanent position working directly for Rio Tinto
- A competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience with annual incentive program
- Comprehensive medical benefits including subsidised private health insurance for employees and immediate family
- Attractive share ownership plan
- Company provided insurance cover
- Extensive salary sacrifice & salary packaging options
- Career development & education assistance to further your technical or leadership ambitions
- Ongoing access to family-friendly health and medical wellbeing support
- Leave for all of life’s reasons (vacation/annual, paid parental, sick leave)
- Exclusive employee discounts (banking, accommodation, cars, retail and more)
- Possible domestic relocation assistance
Where you’ll be working
Located 110km west of Newman, West Angelas operates on a fly in fly out roster from Perth, Broome and Busselton.
West Angelas is a pioneer in autonomous technologies – we were the first site to trial autonomous haul trucks and incorporate autonomous drilling into our operations in 2008, and we continue to have one of the largest mining fleets in the Pilbara.
Our high grade, low phosphorous Marra Mamba orebody is an integral part of the Pilbara Blend, contributing both lump and fines products on around four trains each day. At the West Angelas hub there are state-of-the-art power generation and refueling facilities. These facilities supply power and diesel fuel to the East Pilbara mine sites.
The future is bright at West Angelas with ongoing growth projects at Deposits C and D, as well as additional deposits under study providing enormous opportunities for personal development and career growth.
Applications close on 12th November 2026 (Rio Tinto reserves the right to remove advertised roles prior to this date).
