About your role
We are looking for a Superintendent Engineering to join our Underground Operations Team delivering the world-class mine in Mongolia. This is a key role within the owner’s team with the responsibility for the safe and timely completion of engineering deliverables and management of major fabrication packages to support the construction of the Block Cave production infrastructure.
The scope includes all aspects of underground sustaining capital infrastructure engineering design and fabrication, notably truck loading chutes, steel lined ore bins, extraction level precast 100MPa and haulage level concrete roadways, services reticulation (service water, compressed air, dewatering, dust suppression and power), Drawpoint steel sets, new workshop facilities, dewatering pump stations and associated infrastructure.
This role will lead the coordination of the scope development, project schedule, engineering design, tender packages and evaluation, major component procurement and package management, contractor management for the cave production infrastructure for the underground block cave Panels #1 and #2.
The role shall ensure that the designs and fabrication are compliant with the Oyu Tolgoi health and safety systems and procedures, ensuring designs and fabricated components are completed to the required standard, quality and international best practices.
Working within the Extraction Level/Haulage Level Construction integrated delivery team (mining and construction disciplines) and reporting to the Manager Underground Engineering Projects you will lead the following;
- Scope development for new packages
- Package procurement strategy development to support the long-term objectives of the business
- Development of Project Budgets and cost estimation
- Coordination of Tendering Process and Technical Evaluations
- Lead a team of engineers for the management of engineering service providers, vendors and contractors.
- Manage the development of the Nationals Engineers technical knowledge and skills through mentoring process, on job training, and support their development planning.
- Coordinate the timely analysis and response to TQ’s and RFI’s.
- Manage packages to deliver within the require project schedules and budget
- Lead risk assessment and management of change associated with projects
- Coordinate the weekly / monthly reporting
- Chair monthly contracts progress meetings with vendors
- Focus on safety in design aspects of new scope to minimize the risks associated with execution
- Support the interface between engineering, technical and construction teams providing constructability reviews, HAZOPS, incorporation of lessons learned into future scope.
- Undertaking engineering documentation audits to ensure compliance with legislative requirements and Rio Tinto project engineering guidance and standards
- Providing technical support and direction on engineering matters, building on and sharing of the lessons learned
- Participating in constructability reviews to identify opportunities to improve execution and/or operations of the facilities
- Maintaining relationships with key stakeholders to drive a culture of collaboration, participation and improvement
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have the following:
- Experience in leading complex and multidisciplinary engineering projects.
- Outstanding commitment to HSE and Quality
- EPCM, ESP or owners team experience equally valued
- University qualification in Engineering discipline.
- At least 10 years of experience in engineering design and leadership of engineering disciplines.
- Engineering design experience in aspects of Civil, Mechanical and Piping.
- Have experience in the coordination of multiple engineering design and fabrication packages
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of an integrated delivery team
- An ability to work autonomously within a highly complex project delivery environment
- A can-do attitude that seeks to provide solutions and a desire for continuous improvement

It will also be beneficial if you have:
- Underground construction experience
- Experience in ore handling systems, chutes, ore bin.

Where you’ll be working
Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
