About the position
The Simandou Mining Project (the Project) is a Greenfield iron ore exploration and mining project located in the southeast of the Republic of Guinea, in the Guinea Forestière region of West Africa. The project is being developed by Simfer SA (Company), the licensee of the Simandou Iron Ore Project Concession. Simfer SA is a joint venture between Rio Tinto, Chinalco (Aluminum Corporation of China) and the Guinean government. The project will include the development of a 50 to 100 mtpa, a railway of approximately 650 km and a port facility south of Conakry.
Rio Tinto is seeking a highly skilled Principal Advisor specializing in biodiversity offsets with a deep understanding of the intersection between anthropology, communities, and biodiversity conservation. As a subject matter expert, this role will provide the essential technical expertise and guidance to support the decision-making process related to Rio Tinto’s biodiversity offsets program in Guinea. This position offers remote working and there will be some ad-hoc travels to Guinea.
The Principal Advisor will play a critical role in ensuring that the company’s biodiversity offset strategies are scientifically robust, culturally sensitive, and aligned with both corporate sustainability goals and local community needs.
Reporting to the Senior Business Partner, this role is responsible for:

Serve as the subject matter expert on biodiversity offsets, providing technical advice and guidance to the Rio Tinto team in Guinea.

Develop and refine biodiversity offset strategies that are scientifically sound, culturally appropriate, and aligned with international best practices.

Provide in-depth analysis and recommendations on biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, and the integration of community and cultural considerations into offset planning.

Support the decision-making process by providing the technical underpinnings necessary for evaluating and implementing biodiversity offset projects.

Work closely with senior management to ensure that all decisions related to biodiversity offsets are informed by the latest scientific research, regulatory requirements, and community perspectives.

Assess potential biodiversity offset sites, considering ecological, social, and cultural factors to ensure successful outcomes.

Integrate anthropological insights into biodiversity offset planning, ensuring that local communities’ cultural values, practices, and knowledge are respected and incorporated.

Engage with local communities to understand their relationship with the land, biodiversity, and natural resources, using this understanding to inform offset strategies.

Facilitate community participation in the development and implementation of biodiversity offsets, fostering collaboration and mutual benefit.

Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, academic institutions, and local communities, to ensure the successful design and implementation of biodiversity offsets.

Represent Rio Tinto in discussions with stakeholders, advocating for biodiversity conservation and community engagement as integral components of the offset strategy.

Provide technical input into stakeholder consultations, ensuring that all relevant ecological and cultural considerations are addressed.

Design and implement monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess the effectiveness of biodiversity offset projects, ensuring that they deliver the intended conservation and community outcomes.

Conduct regular field assessments to monitor the progress of biodiversity offsets, identifying any issues and recommending corrective actions as needed.

Report on the performance of biodiversity offset projects to senior management, providing insights and recommendations for continuous improvement.

Provide training and capacity-building support to Rio Tinto staff, local partners, and community members on biodiversity offsets, conservation practices, and community engagement.

Promote knowledge sharing and best practices within Rio Tinto and with external stakeholders, enhancing the overall impact of biodiversity offsets in Guinea.
What you will bring
To be successfully considered for this role, you will ideally have:

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Anthropology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field. A Master’s degree or higher is preferred.

At least 10 years of experience in biodiversity conservation, environmental management, or a related field, with a focus on biodiversity offsets and community engagement.

Proven expertise in the intersection of biodiversity, anthropology, and community relations, with experience working in Africa or similar contexts.

Strong background in designing, implementing, and evaluating biodiversity offset projects, with a demonstrated ability to integrate scientific, cultural, and social considerations.

Experience working with and managing projects with NGOs in a developing context, preferably within Africa.

Deep technical knowledge of biodiversity conservation, ecological principles, and offset methodologies.

Strong understanding of cultural anthropology and community engagement practices, particularly in relation to biodiversity and natural resource management.

Excellent organization, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information into actionable insights.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders and build strong relationships.

Skilled at managing and reporting on multiple projects of varying degrees of complexity at one time.

À propos du Projet Simandou Sud
Le projet de minerai de fer de Simandou (Blocs 3 & 4) est situé en République de Guinée, en Afrique de l'Ouest. Il s’agit d’un gisement de minerai de fer de haute qualité et de classe mondiale et représente l'une des plus grandes réserves connues de minerai de fer au monde.
Le projet Simandou Sud opère dans le cadre de la coentreprise Simfer où le gouvernement de Guinée détient 15 %, Rio Tinto et Chinalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH) , qui détiennent respectivement 45,05 % et 39,95 % de Simandou, continuent de travailler avec le gouvernement Guinéen pour explorer les options permettant de valoriser le gisement de minerai de fer de Simandou, ainsi que des mécanismes potentiels de collaboration sur les infrastructures requises au développement du Projet et aux opérations minières.

Votre milieu de travail
Le projet est détenu par Simfer S.A., coentreprise entre Rio Tinto (45,05 %), Chinalco (39,95 %) et le gouvernement de la Guinée (15 %). Rio Tinto est l’exploitant désigné des blocs 3 et 4 de Simandou. Ces blocs, situés dans les montagnes de Simandou, représentent l’un des plus importants gisements inexploités de minerai de fer à haute teneur actuellement, avec des ressources indiquées dépassant 1,7 milliard de tonnes.
La mine créera plusieurs milliers d’emplois directs et indirects, avec une valeur économique se chiffrant dans les milliards de dollars au cours de sa durée de vie estimée. Simandou sera également un moteur de croissance économique et s’appuiera sur les meilleures pratiques en vue d’assurer un milieu de travail sûr, durable et respectueux de l’environnement. Le minerai de fer issu de la mine sera utilisé pour fabriquer des produits essentiels dont la société moderne dépend, notamment des véhicules électriques, des infrastructures d’énergie renouvelable, des immeubles et des ponts.
