About the role
Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.
We are looking for a Superintendent: Furnaces, to manage Smelter Services (water treatment plant, gas plant, air compressor house, electrodes, oxygen, nitrogen gas distribution and CO gas) to ensure that safety, production, operational efficiency, maintenance, HR and budget requirements are met.
To achieve this, a variety of metallurgical and materials handling equipment is utilized by seven main plants – Mineral Separation, Roaster, Char, Smelter, Iron Processing, Smelter Feed and Slag Processing Plants. The diversity of the products requires processes ranging from wet gravity separation through to pyro-metallurgical post smelting treatment. Smelting and Processing rely on integrated planning and effective teamwork between all stakeholders to achieve the desired outputs.
Reporting to the Manager: CPA and Smelter, your responsibilities will include:

Develop and maintain safe operational and engineering standards and continuously review specifications and schedules.

Ensure equipment integrity is maintained according to safety standards.

Maintain NOSA, MBO system, RT safety standards, Occupational health, safety and environment registers, ISO 14000; 9000 and 18001 systems.

Manage and control quality of all raw materials and products.

Conduct timeous investigation incidents and ensure adequate remedial action is implemented.

Supervise and control the activities, standards of performance and behaviour of designated staff.

Ensure training, development and succession of designated subordinate staff within section.

Optimize plant performance and resource utilization.

Ensure effective support from Process Metallurgy and all other service departments toward enhancing business processes.

Prepare and control the section’s annual CAPEX plan by forecasting operational requirements and monitoring / driving progress on a monthly basis.

Execute and drive the “Visible felt” leadership program by coaching and observing people on the job
What you’ll bring
-
Degree in Metallurgy / Chemical Engineering / Engineering
-
Supervisory / Management qualification (tertiary) would be advantageous.
-
South African driver’s License
-
SAMTRAC training would be advantageous.
-
5 years production / process / engineering experience, of which 3 years must be within a supervisory capacity within a large industrial environment.

Experience with iron, steelmaking and/or hot metal processes within a large industrial / heavy industry environment would be advantageous.

In-depth knowledge of pyro-metallurgy, gas and water treatment techniques.

Maintenance experience – exposure to basic mechanical, electrical and instrumentation principles
