About the role
We are looking for a Global Portfolio Manager (Capesize & VLOC) to join Rio Tinto Marine’s global freight leadership team and hold bottom-line accountability for one of the largest dry bulk books. You will play an active role in the freight markets to achieve best-in-class freight/chartering outcomes for the business.
This role presents an excellent opportunity for a visionary and highly motivated commercial leader who thrives on achieving results through effective stakeholder management and executing critical chartering decisions. The position entails full ownership of the global Capesize & VLOC portfolio and includes the responsibility for leading a team of experienced charterers.
Reporting to the General Manager – Chartering, you will:

Work together with Marine leaders as a global freight team to collectively drive desk-related chartering opportunities and to deliver a pipeline of high-value strategies that will benefit the overall mandate of Rio Tinto Marine.

Lead and grow the global portfolio of Capesize & VLOC chartering activities in alignment with internal customers, agreed portfolio strategy, and global business demands.

Engage external freight market participants at the most senior levels to ensure strategic partnerships are fostered while also contributing to business goals of delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective solutions.

Be able to articulate and analyze market trends related to the global freight markets and be able to identify trading opportunities to increase commercial value for the freight books through an excellent understanding of all aspects of physical chartering.

Develop and be responsible for all freight risk tools across the portfolio and demonstrate a clear understanding of both physical and financial risk.

Collaborate dynamically with internal teams specialising in derivatives, market analysis, and voyage operations to enhance optimization value through strategic trading initiatives and fleet performance.

Partner with vetting and voyage operations to improve safety, crew welfare, and the environmental footprint of the chartered fleet.

Safeguard self and team members by always acting within agreed governance frameworks and supporting principles and guidelines.
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, International Trade, Marketing, Supply Chain, or Maritime/Logistics.

At least 15 years of relevant experience in physical dry bulk and/or freight trading.

Able to independently trade all types of charters / and any associated voyage cargoes.

In-depth knowledge of FFA derivatives & market dynamics within the dry bulk sector.

Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Experience with safety aspects of dry bulk vessels (beneficial).

Where you will be working
Headquartered in Singapore, and integrated with Rio Tinto’s assets, hubs, and offices globally, our Commercial group works hand-in-hand with our product groups to ensure both the amount and types of products we produce meet our customers’ needs, and manage the trade-off between volumes, quality, cost, and capital expenditure.
