About the role
The purpose of Rio Tinto Marine (Marine) is to create value for the Group by leveraging its competitive advantages in the shipping industry. This entails being the central repository of marine supply chain expertise in the Rio Tinto Group, with a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of marine transportation, global freight markets, and the international regulatory environment.
We are looking for a Senior Chartering Manager to join the global freight portfolio team. You will play an active and visible role in the global freight markets and be responsible for developing and transacting period/spot freight deals for Rio Tinto Marine.
This role is a great opportunity for the successful applicant to work closely with senior freight leaders across teams, as well as across other freight portfolios (where required) – ultimately contributing to a high-value global freight book.
Reporting initially to the General Manager – Chartering, the role, once firmly established, will report to the Global Portfolio Manager – Capesize & VLOC. In this role, you will:

Lead and develop long-term period chartering for VLOCs and life of asset strategies, while also being fully responsible for the risk management of this growing fleet.

Based on business needs, be the single point of contact, to charter and go to market (with a focus on VLOC vessels), requirements associated with Rio Tinto demands, including excellent in-depth knowledge across the pulse of the S&P markets, and, where required of other asset classes.

Support all freight requirements (including spot/period fixing / 3rd Party tonnes) for new projects across the global freight books.

Work alongside Global Portfolio Managers and other internal teams to develop views of the market and be able to clearly articulate and communicate those views.

Focus on growing our market reputation with strong, sustainable relationships across the dry bulk freight industry (yards, banks, brokers, and head owners) while ensuring continued access to safe and efficient vessels.

Optimize results by understanding and trading the physical dry bulk market conditions through long-term asset value opportunities.

Be adaptable and willing to support other freight portfolios and/or ad-hoc chartering projects

Partner with vetting and operations to improve the safety, reliability, and environmental footprint of the chartered vessels.

Safeguard self and team members by always acting within agreed governance frameworks and supporting principles and guidelines
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, International Trade, Marketing, Supply Chain, or Maritime/Logistics.

At least 10 to 12 years of chartering experience. Fully knowledgeable and able to independently trade physical spot/period vessels/cargoes across asset classes and/or associated markets. FFA knowledge will be beneficial.

A proven track record of executing vessel charters and managing assets most optimally through market cycles.

Excellent communication and analytical skills, and the ability to present and influence stakeholders with sharp & all-rounded views of the market.

Effective negotiation skills & professional integrity.

Motivated, yet curious and driven to go above and beyond daily chartering mandates, while being flexible as the role expands with the demands of the desk.

Where you will be working
Headquartered in Singapore and integrated with Rio Tinto’s assets, hubs, and offices globally, our Commercial group works hand-in-hand with our product groups to ensure both the amount and types of products we produce meet our customers’ needs, and manage the trade-off between volumes, quality, cost, and capital expenditure.
