About the role
Within Rio Tinto Commercial, the B&A (Bauxite & Alumina) Commercial unit is a key part of Aluminum Commercial with accountability for sales of 11 million MT of alumina per annum and 55 million MT of bauxite. In addition, the B&A Commercial team is accountable for the sales of aluminum hydrate (hydrate), other high value non-metallurgical aluminas and by-products.
We are now inviting interested and qualified talents to join us in our journey. We have an exciting opening for a Senior Manager – Global Alumina, who will lead Rio Tinto’s marketing, sales and trading of alumina globally. The position manages a multi-billion global book fostering relationships with different customers and suppliers.
Reporting to the General Manager Commercial B&A, you will

Lead and grow Rio Tinto’s global alumina commercial activities maintaining relationships with different customers and suppliers.

Develop a small high performing team to leading performance across strategy, sales, spot book market making, supply chain and contract administration objectives to deliver on the group’s priorities.

Oversee the purchase, sale, and marketing of alumina (10-11Mt/year)

Nurture a deep network within the industry providing insights and intelligence that can support book management and commercial decision making.

Develop and optimise Rio Tinto’s hydrate business in Pacific shaping the size of the business, commercial strategy and distribution model.

Foster a strong link with alumina production facilities and commercial S&OP and supply chain teams supporting an integrated commercial / technical approach to management of the alumina business, inventories and risk management for Rio Tinto

Play a leadership role within B&A commercial team

Negotiate short and long-term alumina contracts, ensuring favourable terms and conditions for the company.

Manage unexpected disruptive events such as Force Majeure, sanctions, and outbreaks, mitigating risks and ensuring business continuity.

Contribute actively to the development of various Bauxite and Alumina strategies, including acquisitions and implementation of new agreements.

Implement the product group or business unit's marketing strategy through sales activities, contract administration, and customer relationship management.

Ensure relevant systems are in place to accurately capture and promptly transfer market and customer information within sales, marketing, and industry analysis teams.
What you will bring:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, Commerce, Supply Chain Management, or related field.

Minimum of 10 years of experience in commercial roles, preferably within the aluminium industry.

Proven track record of managing large portfolios and maintaining strong customer relationships.

Excellent negotiation skills with experience in contract management.
-
Strong leadership skills with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive strategic initiatives.

Experience managing a commercial trading book, including P&L and risk management
-
Experience with derivatives markets including managing risk with LME/CME/SHFE would be advantageous to the role
-
Experience in managing unexpected disruptive events and mitigating risks.

Knowledge of bulk material supply chain dynamics and market trends. Knowledge of aluminium, alumina and bauxite will give you an edge for this role.

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, with a strong sense of urgency and adaptability.

Effectively communicate with functional leaders to execute the product group or business unit's marketing strategy and achieve business objectives.

Where you will be working
Headquartered in Singapore, and integrated with Rio Tinto’s assets, hubs, and offices globally, our Commercial group works hand-in-hand with our product groups to ensure both the amount and types of products we produce meet our customer’s needs, and manage the trade-off between volumes, quality,cost and capital expenditure.
Bauxite and Alumina (B&A) is accountable for Rio Tinto’s worldwide activities related to bauxite mining and refining into smelter-grade alumina. The business unit employs approximately 6,000 people (including JVs and contractors) in ten countries and owns and /or operates five bauxite mines and four smelter-grade alumina plants. B&A is a recognized industry leader and has an extensive project pipeline which includes the expansion of operations in Australia and other potential countries.
