About the role

We are looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with open-pit geotechnical experience who will support the Superintendent Geotechnical Engineer in build and co-ordinate geotechnical engineering team and provide the operational geotechnical support for the Simandou project.

This is a great opportunity to be involved with the critical functions to support our Simandou technical services team, you will have responsibility for the implementation of geotechnical campaigns, assist with geotechnical hazards identification, and assist with geotechnical monitoring systems. As part of your duties, you will co-ordinate the new team and work closely with the Mine Engineers, Hydrogeologists, Geologists, Infrastructure Geotechnical and other stakeholders.
Reporting to the Superintendent Geotechnical Engineer and working in a collaborative community you will be:

Providing the geotechnical support to the business and personnel of the Simandou mine operation and working with multiple stakeholders

Proactive management of geotechnical hazards and risks through compliance with the Slope and Dump Management Plan (SDMP)

Supporting and training the geotechnical engineers in gathering geotechnical data by conducting wall mapping for slope reconciliation reports, conducting geotechnical inspections and providing geotechnical advice to production, drill and blast and mine planning.

Design of slope monitoring system, installation, and performance management (Radars/Prisms monitoring, InSAR, TDR, Inclinometer, etc)

Managing, coaching and training the geotechnical engineering team

Carry out operational design reviews of pits and dumps using the RocScience and similar applications.

Assist with geotechnical monitoring programme and creating and updating geotechnical hazard maps.

Supervise the installation of geotechnical monitoring equipment.

Ensuring compliance with safety standards and procedures.

Identifying, characterize and develop remediation plans for slope instability risks that have the potential to impact safety or mine productivity, coordinating between short- and mid-range technical teams.

Implementing systems and processes that regularly monitor the triggers of all major geotechnical hazards.
What You’ll Bring

Degree qualified in Geosciences or related discipline.

Established experience with controls of geotechnical and water risks in an operating open pit mine, TARP, ground management plans with at least 5 years of experience in Geotechnical monitoring systems (Radars, prisms, etc) setup, analysis and training.

Success in this role requires influencing with integrity and by collaborating with others. This is a great opportunity for someone with strong analytical skills and excellent relationship building and communication skills.

Strong leadership skills including fostering effective teamwork and leveraging capability across different groups, whilst managing professionals and non-professionals with a range of skill levels in a challenging and dynamic environment.

You will be a highly motivated individual with experience surface mining, geotechnical engineering and earth works projects.

Demonstrated project studies experience and ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team, positive approach to delivering to tight deadlines and strong communication and influencing capability.

Demonstrated communication skills, including an ability to build relationships with both internal stakeholders and external consultancies.

About the Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.
Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
