About the role
Iron Ore Sales & Marketing, part of RT Commercial, is responsible for the distribution and placement of more than 330 million tonnes per annum of Rio Tinto iron ore. In 2024, Iron Ore delivered >$30b in revenue for RT, and this is expected to rise as our new mine in Guinea (Simandou) comes online.
The iron ore market continues to evolve, with both iron ore supply and the steel mill landscape becoming increasingly complex. The decarbonization transition is also a key factor shaping our commercial strategies, as we partner with customers to support their decarbonization goals. Our goal is to deliver superior margin performance through effective long-term product placement and shorter-term tactical placement decisions.
We are looking for a Principal Advisor – Iron Ore Marketing to lead the development of commercial strategies and drive strategic planning activities for Iron Ore Commercial. This role will be key in supporting the Iron Ore Commercial senior leadership team in strategic decision-making and value generation.

-
Develop and lead the project work plan for a multi-disciplinary team.
-
Identify, evaluate, and develop business cases to support new Commercial opportunities and initiatives supplemented by robust evaluation models (discount cash flow models).
-
Deliver commercial papers and presentations to support and influence senior management's decision-making.
-
Develop, build, and implement plans for key elements of the overarching strategy for Iron Ore’s Commercial portfolio.
-
Foster a culture of zero harm and continuous improvement.

Strong analytical skills with expertise in corporate finance principles, financial modelling, and evaluation.
-
Ability to think strategically and understand the implications of macroeconomic development to the iron ore and steel industry.
-
Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and execute.
-
Demonstrated experience in a commercial environment within a large organisation.
-
Experience in leading and coaching teams to unleash their potential
-

-
MBA, Master's in Commerce, or Master's in Mineral Economics.
What we offer
-
A work environment where safety is always the number one priority
-
A full-time position working directly for Rio Tinto
-
A competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience, with an annual incentive program
-
Comprehensive medical benefits, including health insurance for employees and immediate family
-
Attractive share ownership plan
-
Company provided insurance cover
-
Career development & education assistance to further your technical or leadership ambitions
-
