About the role
We are looking for a Senior Advisor, Business Services, to join the Pilbara Mine Operations Health, Safety, Environment, and Community (HSEC) Operational Delivery and H&S Technical team at Rio Tinto. This is an exciting opportunity to support a high-performing, multi-disciplinary team working across our extensive geographical footprint.
Reporting to the General Manager, you will play a pivotal role in driving strategic and operational excellence across Pilbara Mines. This role is designed for a systems thinker and problem solver who thrives on turning hypotheses into actionable insights. You will work closely with site teams, functional peers, and leadership to identify barriers to performance and develop solutions that enhance safety, efficiency, and business outcomes.
Key parts of the role include:

Formulate hypotheses around operational challenges and test them using structured data analysis.

Lead problem-solving initiatives that translate insights into measurable improvements.

Identify and validate barriers to achieving HSEC and operational goals.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives aligned with site and Group priorities.

Coordinate annual Planning process, and drive cost saving initiatives within the team.

Support HSEC and PMO Senior Leadership with data and insights for monthly and quarterly reporting.

Support the development and ongoing review of the 5-year HSEC strategic planning cycle.

Partner with capability and development division to identify the future skillsets required of the HSEC professionals.

Build strong relationships with site teams, HSEC, HR, Finance, and other Business Services Advisors.

Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to ensure alignment and shared ownership of outcomes.

Ability to influence without authority, to lead and support change.

Translate operational data into strategic insights for leadership and frontline teams.

Champion a culture of curiosity, accountability, and proactive problem-solving.
About you
To succeed in the role, you will have:

Demonstrated analytical skills in hypothesis testing and data interpretation.

Able to simplify complex information into actionable insights with measurable outcomes.

Experience in business improvement, operational strategy, and operational delivery.

Proficient in stakeholder engagement and communication.
-
Skilled in identifying and utilising expertise within the broader HSEC team.
-
Knowledgeable about mining operations and HSEC principles and systems.
-
Experienced in handling ambiguity and clarifying complex environments.

Background in stakeholder engagement, presentations, and negotiations, with experience influencing others
-
Effective written and verbal communication abilities.

Proficient in critical thinking and constructing narratives to get endorsement of ideas or concepts within leadership teams.

Capable of managing and delivering multiple priorities concurrently.
-
Maintain situational awareness, balancing operational requirements and strategic objectives.
-
History of leading business improvement projects and delivering results.
-
Experience in leading, developing, and coaching teams.
-
Familiar with business improvement methodologies and tools (such as Six Sigma, PPS, and Lean).

Understanding of applied health and safety methodologies.
-
Knowledge of HSEC standards and procedures.
-
Financial understanding and experience in cost performance.

Where you’ll be working
This role is based in Perth, at our head office in Central Park, and working Monday to Friday.
Travel to site is on an ad-hoc basis, to understand and connect with operational teams.
In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, we own a world-class, integrated network of 17 mines, four independent port terminals, a rail network spanning nearly 2,000 kilometres and related infrastructure – all designed to respond rapidly to changes in demand. We are one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of iron ore.
