Oyu Tolgoi is one of the most exciting projects in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits. The project, managed by Rio Tinto, is expanding underground. With a high demand of skills required to complete the project safely and successfully, Oyu Tolgoi is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia’s development and the prosperity of the Mongolian people.

The Opportunity
Superintendent Geology manages the mine geology function of the underground technical department by applying advanced technical knowledge and skills in mine geology as well as manage subordinate work leaders and ensure that decisions are compliant with site policies.
What the role entails
Day-to-day execution of underground geological functions including:
- High level supervision of the collection of grade/ quality control samples and geological mapping, and collation of this data into appropriate geological information management systems
- Grade control and geology reports to production and technical teams
- High level review and supervision of resource infill and grade / quality control drilling programs
- Contribute to and review long term drilling strategy
- High level review and supervision of the collection, compilation and reporting of quality control and quality assurance sample data
- High level review and supervision of the compilation, analysis and reporting of mine reconciliation reports and communication of findings to production and technical teams
- Identify, evaluate and resolve short term reconciliation issues
- Manage the site underground mine geology team and contractors
- Manage contractor and service providers through the tender process, content of the contract, and monitor the contract deliverables in accordance with company standards
- Supervise and develop the performance of the team in line with Rio Tinto’s company values, in order to achieve objectives
- Collaborate and assist with other mine functions as required for geological sampling and drilling activities
- Assist with compliance to Rio Tinto standards for resources, reserves and reconciliation
- Ensure that the mine geology work complies with these standards
- Contribute to strategic decision making based on understanding of the Company’s discipline / commodity requirements
What you will need for this role
- Bachelor's degree in Geology and 12 years’ experience in production geology, cave mining preferred, or master’s degree in Geology and 10 years’ experience in production geology.
- Minimum 10 year’s work experience or otherwise significant practical experience and on the job training
- Strong communication in English with multi-national context, a continuous improvement mindset, and the ability to thrive in fast-paced environments.
