About the role
We are looking for a Superintendent Production Engineering to join our diverse team delivering the world-class Oyu Tolgoi underground block cave mine in Mongolia. This is a key role within the Owner’s team with the responsibility to coach, train, mentor and develop the Mongolian Production Engineering team.
Working 4 Week on/ 2 Week off FIFO and reporting to the Manager Production, you will be:
- Coach, mentor and develop the Mongolian production engineering team
- Ensure safe and effective underground production engineering work systems to continue safely ramping up the first underground block cave in Mongolia, and production engineering work for the commencement of the next 2 production blocks
- Work with multiple stakeholders to coach and develop a competent national engineering workforce capable of safely executing underground mining activities in line with Rio Tinto and Oyu Tolgoi group standards
- Ensure the development of safe and effective annual, quarterly, monthly, and weekly plans, for the production operations team, and these are aligned with meeting forecast budget targets
- Coordination of risk assessments, safe work procedures, and training packages to set up the production team for success.
- Checking production designs ensuring that the design is both technically correct as well as operationally achievable
- Liaising with the technical drill and blast team, the short range, mid range, and long range planning teams to ensure safe and effective plans are being developed
- Auditing production related activities and make recommendations for continuous improvements.
- Use block caving experience and knowledge to guide and advise national engineers on the best resolution for issues that occur
- Manage and maintain a safe and secure work environment
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with all employees and project stakeholders.
What you’ll bring
- Undergraduate or equivalent or higher education obtained through degrees or diplomas from academic college or universities in Mining Engineering or relevant discipline
- 10 plus years experience in underground mines
- Experience in leadership and shift supervision of mining activities
- First class mine manager qualification or equivalent highly regarded
- Experience in block cave/ sub level cave production activities highly regarded
- Experience in managing and developing engineers
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of an integrated delivery team
- Quality assurance and continuous improvement skills
- Work and living experience in developing countries with strong cultural awareness

Where you’ll be working
Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
