About the role
Step into a diverse and inclusive team at Rio Tinto’s Maintenance, Planning & Engineering function as our next Electrical and Control Systems Engineer.
In this exciting role, you’ll play a key part in ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of Fixed Plant electrical, control systems, and instrumentation assets—driving real impact across our operations.
Reporting to the MP&E Engineering Superintendent, you will be responsible for the below duties :

Adhere to all Rio Tinto health and safety standards, policies and procedures and report any safety hazards and risks to the appropriate channels

Minimize business interruptions by providing engineering support for escalated electrical, control system, network, and instrumentation faults
-
Provide technical guidance and oversight for complex instrumentation, control systems, and electrical asset maintenance work to maintenance, operations, project, and commercial teams
-
Execute programs of work to optimize asset management for electrical assets
-
Support the implementation of improvement work to IOWA engineering standards
-
Implement DE improvements to control system and electrical assets
-
Collaborate with MP&E central teams to share learnings and support replication opportunities
-
Review Management of Change for site assets, including control system and process control assets
-
Lead and support investigations into incidents and outages
-
Manage onsite spares for electrical, control system, and instrumentation assets
-
Oversee configuration management for electrical, control system, and instrumentation assets
-
Lead capital projects for electrical, control system, and instrumentation upgrades
-
Coordinate with central E&C Engineering and act as the point of escalation for complex control system and electrical asset fault diagnosis and recovery

Monitor and maintain advanced control system schemes

Support and execute machine protection and safety-related control system audits
What you’ll bring
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

Knowledge and experience in electrical engineering and process control disciplines
-
Ability to solve a range of problems using largely defined procedures and solutions
-
Strong communication skill to present specialist subject matter to non-specialist stakeholders
-
Ability to work well in a solo or team environment
-
Knowledge of Reliability Engineering and Asset Management practices
-
Knowledge of the following areas : Electrical Safety, Transformers, Generators, Switchgear, ABB VSDs, UPSs, HVAC, Motors, Cabling, Instrumentation, Earthing, Functional Safety, Arc Flash, Electrical Protection, Legislation, Regulations, Electrical Australian Standards, Control Systems – Schneider, Citect SCADA, Process Control

Where you’ll be working
This role is offered on 8 days on, 6 days off family friendly roster, FIFO from Perth to Yandi or Gudai Darri Hub.
Located approximately 95km northwest of Newman in the East Pilbara, Yandicoogina is one of Australia's highest-producing iron ore mines. The site produces unique Hamersley Iron Yandi (HIY) fines and operates a fleet of autonomous haul trucks and drills, supporting efficient and safe operations.
Yandicoogina is recognised for its strong culture of teamwork, safety, and innovation, with a pioneering spirit. The mine supports a fly-in fly-out workforce from multiple regional hubs, including Perth, Busselton, and Derby – enhancing accessibility and community engagement across Western Australia.
Located 110km north-west of Newman, our Gudai-Darri iron ore mine is our most technologically advanced mine. It leverages technology such as autonomous trucks, trains, drills and water carts. Gudai-Darri also has more than 70 design innovations including a reclaimer with a rotable bucket wheel, a fully automated robotic laboratory and in-field access to data and systems for all team members.
