With an asset base of 220 locomotives, 14,000 ore cars and 1,900km’s of track, RTIO’s rail network is one of the largest privately owned and most productive heavy haul rail networks in the world.
As Rio Tinto continues to strengthen cost discipline and manage increasing scale and complexity, there is a growing demand for focused spend optimisation, advanced analytics, AI, and digital enablement to optimise rail spend and support cost leadership on a day to day basis.
The Procurement Analyst – Rail provides direct spend optimisation, analytical and digital support to enable effective cost leadership across RTIO Rail.
The role focuses on short term spend optimisation, improving the visibility, discipline and efficiency of rail spend through data driven analysis, AI enabled tools and continuous process improvement. Supporting RTP Rail and working closely with multiple other Procurement teams, rail operations and functional groups, the role supports sustained spend management beyond individual sourcing events.
This is an execution focused role, playing a critical part in embedding repeatable spend management practices, analytical rigour, and digital efficiency across the rail portfolio.
Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Business Partner – Rail, the role will:

Support procurement spend optimisation initiatives, identifying cost discipline opportunities, eliminate inefficiencies and improve spend control.

Provide analytical insight of spend data to identify patterns, drivers, anomalies and improvement opportunities across the rail category and its suppliers.

Support spend governance optimisation projects and purchasing controls to improve purchasing discipline.

Develop and maintain spend reports and analytics to improve RTP Rail contract visibility and decision making.

Apply AI, automation, and digital tools to reduce manual effort, improve data quality and accelerate spend analysis.

Develop and continuously improve time‑saving digital solutions (e.g. automated reporting, optimisation trackers, and analytics models) to enhance spend management efficiency and insight.

Partner with Procurement, Finance and Operations teams to support cost optimisation priorities.

Strong experience in commercial or financial analysis, spend management, or cost optimisation.

Advanced data analysis capability, including working with large, complex datasets and translating insights into clear, actionable outcomes.

Practical experience using digital tools, automation, or AI‑enabled solutions to improve efficiency and decision‑making.

High attention to detail, with the ability to convert analysis into pragmatic recommendations.

Strong collaboration skills, working effectively across multiple departments.

A continuous improvement mindset, with a strong interest in analytics and digital innovation.
