We’re Finding Better Ways™ to provide materials the world needs, now and in the future. Our values – care, courage and curiosity – guide how we work and how we treat each other.
About the role
We are seeking a Senior Advisor – Architecture (Enterprise Architect) to provide architectural leadership across Copper’s digital portfolio and operating model.
This role ensures that new and existing digital solutions are secure, integrated, supportable, and aligned with Rio Tinto enterprise standards while enabling measurable operational outcomes This is a great opportunity for a curious, customer‑focused enterprise architect to shape target-state architecture and guide investment decisions for complex OT/IT/data initiatives, while bridging the gap between Operations, Maintenance, Technical Services, HSEC and technology delivery teams. You work closely with product teams to guide design decisions and balance speed, value, risk, and total cost of ownership to avoid long‑term fragmentation and technical debt.
Key accountabilities
- Define and maintain Copper‑level architecture standards across applications, data, integration, and platforms, aligned with Rio Tinto enterprise standards.
- Review solution designs to ensure alignment with enterprise guardrails (cyber/security patterns, integration standards, data governance, supportability) and Copper strategy.
- Guide teams toward reuse, simplification, and consistent design patterns to accelerate delivery and reduce total cost of ownership.
- Identify opportunities to modernize, rationalize, or retire systems based on lifecycle, risk, and business value.
- Embed security, data governance, and lifecycle thinking into solution designs so solutions are audit-ready and fit for operational use (uptime, shutdown windows, and site constraints).
- Support build‑vs‑buy‑vs‑reuse decisions with clear architectural guidance and transparent trade-offs (value, risk, complexity, time-to-deliver).
- Validate target‑state architectures during transition activities and contribute to portfolio roadmaps (keep / invest / migrate / retire).
- Ensure “integration by design” across operational and enterprise systems (e.g., ERP, historian/SCADA, IoT/telemetry, planning and maintenance systems), promoting resilient patterns and clear ownership boundaries.
- Produce and maintain practical architecture artefacts (e.g., reference architectures, solution blueprints, integration patterns, capability-to-application views) to enable consistent decision-making across products and sites.
About you
To be considered for this opportunity, candidates must be able to demonstrate:
- Strong commitment to the safety of yourself and your colleagues
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, with 5–10 years’ experience in a comparable senior role.
- Experience in solution or enterprise architecture within complex environments, including awareness of data governance principles within large‑scale, enterprise organizations
- Demonstrated track record designing systems across OT, IT, and data platforms in asset-intensive or operational environments.
- Ability to challenge design choices and simplify technical solutions.
- Experience partnering with mining operational stakeholders and designing for site realities (e.g., uptime requirements, shutdown windows, constrained connectivity, and change adoption).
- Experience working with modern data platforms such as cloud lakehouse/analytics platforms (e.g., Databricks or equivalent) and understanding how they integrate with operational systems.
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders, including Operations, Maintenance, Technical Services, HSEC, Cyber, and enterprise platform teams.
Preferred skills
- Modern data and analytics architectures (e.g. lakehouse, streaming).
- Integration patterns including APIs and event‑driven designs.
- Cloud and hybrid platform experience.
- Experience integrating operational systems (e.g., historian/PI, SCADA) with enterprise and cloud platforms using secure, resilient patterns.
- Exposure to analytics, machine learning, or decision‑support products (as part of a broader digital/OT-IT portfolio).
What we offer
- Be recognized for your contributions, innovative thinking and dedication, and leave each day knowing you’ve helped the world progress.
- A work environment where safety is always the number one priority
- Competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience with an annual incentive bonus
- Access to top-tier family-friendly health programs including medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, life insurance coverage, and various voluntary benefits
- Excellent retirement plan including up to 6% defined company contribution; Generous 401k matching program
- Attractive share ownership plan
- Comprehensive leave policies which cover all the moments that matter in life: PTO (paid time off), paid holidays, and paid bereavement leave
- A generous parental leave policy, which ensures you’re able to spend quality time with your new family
- Discount programs for leisure purposes and access to Personify Health with incentives supporting your wellbeing
- Access to our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which provides confidential counselling or expert guidance for you and your family to help get through life’s challenges
Where you’ll be working
You’ll join the Copper Product Group within Copper Technical & HSEC, working at the center of how technology, data, and engineering shape the future of Rio Tinto’s copper business. You’ll sit in Innovation & Technology Systems (I&TS), a growing team that brings together R&D, digital strategy, and data‑driven delivery. The team works across world‑class operations at Kennecott and Oyu Tolgoi, and major growth projects including Winu and Resolution.
I&TS builds and scales digital products, data platforms, advanced analytics, simulation, and decision‑support tools that directly influence how copper is explored, designed, operated, and expanded. You’ll work closely with asset teams and local technology groups, taking ideas from concept through to live operations, while helping shape how Copper owns and evolves its digital capability.
This is hands‑on, applied technology work – close to the assets, close to the decisions, and focused on real impact at scale.
