The Renewable Energy Western Australia (REWA) team is part of the Rio Tinto Energy & Climate (RTEC) group led by the Chief Decarbonisation Officer. The team leads the renewable energy program within Western Australia by working collaboratively across the business to deliver on our climate commitments while ensuring our business is well positioned for the future low-carbon economy.
Rio Tinto’s iron ore operations include an electrical network of 1,000km of transmission lines, multiple 220kV substations, gas turbine generators, solar generation and battery storage feeding mines across the Pilbara region.

We are looking for a collaborative and talented Engineering Manager to lead and oversee the delivery of early-stage engineering for renewable energy projects which include wind and solar generation, battery storage, substation, transmission and high voltage switchyard designs to connect projects to our transmission system.

Reporting to the Chief Advisor Renewable Energy WA working as part of a dynamic and exciting team, you will be:
- Developing and managing the engineering deliverables for Concept, Order of Magnitude and Pre-feasibility study phases.
- Shaping and developing robust concept designs according to budgets, schedules and quality.
- Ensuring engineering outputs meet project objectives and stakeholder requirements.
- Demonstrating trust and teamwork to optimise designs in conjunction with the REWA team, Iron Ore product group, functional support groups and utility teams.
- Analysing trends in engineering technology and maintaining consistency in approach across the engineering of the portfolio.
- Working with study and commercial teams to determine power decarbonization scenarios and completing trade-off analysis of the different technologies and system designs.
- Engage with procurement to establish equipment specifications.
- Maintaining relationships with engineering professionals in the global renewables team to drive a culture of collaboration and improvement using lessons learnt from other projects.
- Managing a small team and growing the engineering capability to meet future requirements of REWA and also providing support to the Global renewable energy projects, as needed.
- Ensuring all approval processes are followed and designs compliant with Rio Tinto standards and industry best practice.
What you’ll bring
- Innovative mindset with experience in solar and wind farm electrical design and associated renewable energy modelling software tools, such as OpenWind, WindPRO, PVSyst, PlantPredict, HST, AutoCAD, 3D Modelling and ArcGIS.
- Knowledge of transmission networks, grid connection and operations.
- Experience with solar and wind farm project evaluation and facilitating handover of concept design and development work for early-stage study phases.
- Sound understanding of equipment technologies such as wind turbines, photovoltaic technology, trackers, inverters, transformers and battery storage systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with non-specialists both face to face and remotely.
- High levels of accuracy and attention to detail, strong report writing skills and the effective use of graphical information.
- Clear and concise communication skills with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships across all levels of the business and influence multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to support and effectively lead a small team of engineering professionals.
- Degree in engineering or related experience.
