About the role

We are looking for a Principal Adviser Project Management to lead a portfolio of projects and programs within our engineering framework, ensuring safe, timely, and effective delivery. The role includes managing a small team of Project Managers and Construction Supervisors and, where required, directly overseeing key projects. All work is delivered in alignment with Rio Tinto’s safety, health, environment, and procurement standards (The Way We Work).

Reporting to the Manager and working in a collaborative community within the Project Engineering Department, you will be working Monday to Friday and:

• Leading by example in safety and compliance, ensuring adherence to all Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulations, standards, and Rio Tinto’s safety culture.
• Driving successful delivery of the project portfolio in alignment with engineering strategy (meeting safety, scope, schedule, and cost objectives).
• Applying and promoting project management best practices, tools, and systems to ensure efficiency, consistency, and compliance across all initiatives.
• Preparing, managing, and controlling project and portfolio budgets, including both capital and operating expenses, with a focus on cost.
• Overseeing procurement and technical strategies, ensuring effective planning, cost control, and value-driven decision-making across projects.
• Fostering collaboration and stakeholder engagement, maintaining strong relationships with internal and external partners.
• Championing continuous improvement, identifying and implementing enhancements in project management processes and systems.
• Directly managing key high-priority projects, and actively mobilize and lead cross-functional project teams when required

About you

• A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
• Degree in Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience and relevant credentials; advanced project management education (such as PMP certification) is considered an asset.
• Experience leading projects in a production, industrial, or project‑based environment, with a solid track record of guiding work safely and effectively through to completion within organizational policies and standard practices.
• Proven people leadership experience, with the ability to set clear direction, balance priorities, and support team performance through coaching, active listening, and collaboration.
• Clear and thoughtful communicator, comfortable working with a range of stakeholders
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), project scheduling software (i.e. Primavera P6 or similar), and holding a valid driver’s license.

The base salary range for this role is $131,360 – $197,040 CAD in addition to allowances, bonus, equity, health or retirement benefits, and any other discretionary benefits offered at Rio Tinto. Our base salary ranges are based on role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by the skills, experience, and impact you bring to the role.
