Oyu Tolgoi is one of the most exciting projects in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits. The project, managed by Rio Tinto, is expanding underground. With a high demand of skills required to complete the project safely and successfully, Oyu Tolgoi is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia’s development and the prosperity of the Mongolian people.

The Opportunity

The Senior Advisor Tactical Operations is to help optimize the value chain system performance of the underground operations. This involves identifying areas for improvement, promoting operational integration, supporting data-driven decision-making, and developing teams, management systems, tools, and behaviors essential for fostering a high-performance culture in underground value chain management. With a strong emphasis on Project Management and Underground Mining disciplines, this role ensures the implementation of standardized project management processes, effective governance, risk management, and continuous improvement.

The Tactical Operations department is part of the OT Underground Operations division and manages the OT Underground value chain. The department drives system-wide value chain performance by integrating weekly and shift schedules, facilitating short-interval control to meet shift targets, analyzing variances for continuous improvement, and managing projects to achieve key milestones and performance targets. Additionally, it provides essential administrative, logistical, and facility management support to ensure underground employees are fully prepared, equipped, and ready to perform their work effectively.

What the role entails

This role is a great opportunity to take the next step in your career on a truly global project. The role will report to the Principal Advisor Tactical Operations and will be primarily responsible for:

• Support the delivery of operational objectives with other UG departments.

• Support and deploy the Safe Production System, underground management operating system, including planning, scheduling, and performance mechanisms.
• Establish and run effective portfolio management capability, including the governance, tracking, & reporting rituals.
• Shape, scope, and implementing business and process improvement projects that impact the value chain.
• Lead change management (people side) and engage stakeholders for sustainable outcomes.
• Coach and develop Tactical Operations team members to management system engineering and project management.

What you will need for this role

• 10 years' experience in business improvement, complex project management, process/system design, change management (people side), or other relevant areas within an underground mining context.

• Background in management consulting or experience with Oyu Tolgoi or Rio Tinto processes is an advantage.
• Significant operational experience or undergraduate or equivalent or higher education obtained through degrees or diplomas from academic college or universities.

• Bachelor’s degree in mining, business, engineering, or a related field required.
• Master’s degree (e.g., MBA, project management) and certifications like 6 Sigma or PM are highly desirable.
• Strong communication in English with multi-national context, a continuous improvement mindset, and the ability to thrive in fast-paced environments.
