About the role:

The Instrumentation Specialist provides hands-on support for the commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of instrumentation and control systems across iron ore mining operations. Working directly on-site, this role focuses on ensuring the reliable performance of ABB switchgear, crushers, conveyors, stackers, and reclaimers. The specialist is expected to actively engage in field diagnostics, loop checks, calibrations, and system verifications, contributing to the safe and efficient operation of critical mining infrastructure. This position requires a strong practical understanding of instrumentation in harsh environments and close collaboration with operations and maintenance teams.

Key Responsibilities:

• Install, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain instrumentation and control systems across the plant/site.

• Ensure accuracy and reliability of instruments related to pressure, temperature, flow, and level monitoring.

• Conduct routine preventive maintenance and calibration checks.

• Work closely with operations and engineering teams to ensure instrumentation supports production and process requirements.

• Maintain documentation, such as calibration reports, equipment manuals, loop drawings, and maintenance logs.

• Configure and troubleshoot PLCs, DCS, and SCADA systems related to instrumentation.

• Implement and support control strategies for process optimization.

• Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards.

• Participate in commissioning of new equipment and systems.

• Provide training and support to operators and junior technicians as needed

Qualifications

• Technical diploma or degree in Instrumentation, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in instrumentation in an industrial, mining, or oil & gas environment.

• Strong knowledge of instrumentation systems, signal types, loop checks, and calibration techniques.

• Experience with PLCs, SCADA systems, and HART communication protocols.

• Familiarity with international standards (ISA, IEC, etc.) for instrumentation.

• Ability to interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, and electrical schematics.

• Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.

• Excellent safety awareness and adherence to procedures.

• Functional safety certification will be advantageous.

About the Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.

Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
