Job Title: Senior Adviser Native American Affairs and Cultural Heritage

About the Role

Rio Tinto Kennecott is looking for an experienced leader to provide subject matter expertise in Native American Engagement and Cultural Heritage Management. This position will be responsible for managing engagement with local Native American tribes and managing cultural heritage sites and artifacts across the site. You will be responsible for implementing the company wide standards for engagement and co-design efforts with local Native American tribes and cultural heritage owners. Strong local external relationships, communication expertise, and ability to manage systems and tools will be needed for success.

Key Responsibilities

Native American Engagement

• Create and foster meaningful relationships with local Native American tribal communities.
• Develop and execute a Native American Engagement Plan, including external relationships, complaints and grievance management, human rights risks, cultural heritage management, and partnerships.
• Identify opportunities for Native American and community groups to participate in cultural heritage management activities.

Cultural Heritage Management

• Ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local laws across operation and land development activities.
• Develop and administer implementation of cultural heritage policies and systems, including cultural heritage reviews, artifact preservation, land disturbance reviews, and artifact storage management.
• Conduct fieldwork as needed. This includes research, Ethnographic surveys for sites of high significance, community projects, social surrounds programs, and complex Archaeological programs.
• Understand relevant studies across the Rio Tinto Kennecott property, particularly mine life extension studies, and conducts due diligence exercises to evaluate potential cultural heritage impacts.

Training

• Educate business on tangible and intangible cultural heritage importance.
• Run heritage awareness sessions for team members.

Management

• Build relationships with Kennecott leadership and act as the site interface for heritage related issues.
• Lead project management and contractor management. This includes negotiation of fieldwork, onboarding, and reporting.
• Prioritize workload and allocate tasks to consultants.

Technical Abilities

• Native American Relationship building and stakeholder relationship management including negotiation and influencing
• Scheduling & Prioritization
• Cultural heritage management planning and project management
• Site Heritage Management
• Fieldwork surveys
• Professional role making a contribution through applying technical/professional knowledge to solve complex problems and recommend solutions. Occasionally contributes to process improvements. Works independently and receives minimal guidance. Provides informal guidance to less experienced staff.

What You’ll Bring (Minium Qualifications)

• Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Heritage Management, History or equivalent experience
• Experience working with Native American and community organizations in relationship management or community engagement capacity. (5+ years of Native American Engagement experience preferred)
• Broad background, including technical expertise, working in Heritage Management in mining & natural resources sectors, consulting, not for profit, or contract management

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum, tellurium and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
