Oyu Tolgoi is one of the most exciting projects in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits. The project, managed by Rio Tinto, is expanding underground. With a high demand of skills required to complete the project safely and successfully, Oyu Tolgoi is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia’s development and the prosperity of the Mongolian people.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Underground Superintendent Survey who can provide professional expertise in underground surveying while supporting the national team to deliver all the required surveying support services to the operational teams. This role will report to Underground Technical services manager.

What the role entails

The purpose of this role is to provide Safe leadership, Guidance, and Quality Assurance to the UGTS Survey team and outputs.

Technical Leadership, Training, and Mentoring:

Manage and provide Survey Guidance for the OTUG site and to all OTUG operation teams.

• QAQC of all UG and surface corresponding control to relate to UG control. 
• Legislated compliance for UG workings and survey control networks
• Ensure UG network quality and closures are of specific class requirements, Class D or higher.
• Ensure all forward breakthroughs are check-surveyed to ensure the lowest closure error possible.
• Ensure all national team members attain the required training and knowledge gain for success.      
• Regular underground inspections and audits on survey work and team members
• Regularly check calibration of all equipment and ensure equipment is rostered to be sent away for calibration as per the requirement
• Ensure all survey requests are met in a timely and accurate manner
• Ensure all SWPs and procedures are written and up to date and reviewed regularly

What you will need for this role

• Background: Undergraduate or equivalent or higher education obtained through degrees or diplomas from academic college or universities. Class 1 survey qualification or similar professional qualification is favorable.
• Experiences:
  • Excellent performance in prior surveying role and at least 8+ years in underground surveying
  • Experienced in QAQC of all UG and surface corresponding control to relate to UG control
  • Large survey control network management is required 
  • Demonstrated experience in leading survey team and providing strong commitment to safety
• Technical Competency:
  • Excellent knowledge of design and surveying software and all equipment / techniques
  • Able to ensure UG network quality and closures are of specific class requirements, Class D or higher
  • Is an expert in the area of operations mine surveying/drafting and keeps abreast of all technological advancements in techniques and equipment
  • Defines strategic plans for surveying and drafting teams to support operations mine operations
  • Promotes a culture of safety where team members take responsibility for their own and others’ safety
  • Proficient in 3D computer drafting software such as Surpac, Deswik, Compnet, Move3
