Oyu Tolgoi is one of the most exciting developments in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits. The project, managed by Rio Tinto, is expanding underground. With a high demand of skills required to complete the project safely and successfully, Oyu Tolgoi is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia’s development and the prosperity of the Mongolian people.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Advisor Underground Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) to join the Underground Operations team. This role is critical in providing advanced technical support, fault-finding expertise, and structured mentoring across complex underground electrical and instrumentation systems. You will play a key role in ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant operation of critical infrastructure, while supporting the development of national workforce capability.

What the role entails:

Working 4 weeks on and 2 weeks off international (FIFO) roster, and reporting to the Superintendent E&I Development (Expat position). This role operates as a frontline technical authority and escalation point in a high-risk, 24/7 underground environment.

You will be the primary technical support and training provider for:

• Deliver advanced hands-on technical support and structured mentoring to national E&I technicians and supervisors.
• Lead complex fault finding, diagnostics, and restoration activities across critical underground systems, including materials handling, substations, mobile mining equipment, infrastructure, and control systems.
• Act as the technical escalation point for complex and high-risk electrical and instrumentation failures.
• Execute root cause analysis and implement sustainable solutions to eliminate repeat failures and improve system reliability.
• Identify and deliver improvements to maintenance strategies, work practices, and system performance aligned with Safe Production System (SPS) principles.
• Ensure all maintenance activities comply with site safety standards, functional safety requirements, and regulatory obligations.
• Maintain integrity and compliance of SIL-rated systems and associated documentation.
• Provide technical input into in-house and capital projects, including commissioning, system testing, and handover of new or upgraded systems.
• Support effective integration of new systems into operational maintenance strategies and work management processes.
• Support shutdown planning and execution to ensure work readiness and reliable restoration of underground assets.
• Develop and deliver structured training, including Safe Work Procedures (SWPs), Single Point Lessons, and competency verification processes.
• Identify capability gaps and actively support the development and progression of national personnel toward independent technical execution.
• Collaborate with planning, reliability, engineering, and operations teams to improve system performance and operational efficiency.
• Promote a strong safety culture through active participation in critical risk management and disciplined work practices.

What you will need for this role:

• Electrical Engineering degree or full trade certification.
• Minimum 10 -12 years’ experience in electrical and instrumentation maintenance within large-scale mining or heavy industrial environments, across multiple sites and operational contexts.
• Extensive hands-on experience in fault finding, diagnostics, and repair of electrical, instrumentation, and control systems in operational environments.
• Proven experience across Underground systems, including Materials Handling Systems, high and low voltage distribution (35 kV / 10.5 kV), mobile mining equipment, underground infrastructure and (Ventilation, De-Watering, Re-Fueling) and Control Systems.
• Familiarity with Safety Integrity Level (SIL) systems and functional safety standards.
• Strong capability in defect elimination, root cause analysis, and implementation of sustainable maintenance solutions.
• Experience supporting commissioning, system upgrades, and integration of new systems into live operational environments.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and develop technical personnel within a multicultural workforce.
• Experience in mentoring and developing technical teams.
• Effective communication skills in English (verbal and written).
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural and dynamic environment.
• Experience working with SAP or other CMMS systems.
• Experience in supervisory roles would be well regarded

  • Step 7, TIA Portal, Simatic WinCC
  • Sinamics SL150 MV Drives

• Functional Safety:
  • SIL-rated systems maintenance and documentation
  • Functional Safety Technician or Engineer certification

General Requirements

• Courageous safety leadership and adherence to OT safety standards.
• Ability to interact with vendors and service teams for technical resolution.
• Flexibility to support both surface and underground areas as needed.
• Experience with SAP or other CMMS platforms is beneficial.
• Commitment to national workforce development and capability uplift.
• Able to perform in a dynamic environment to easily adapt and support all the UG and Surface areas of responsibility if required.
• General work experience in this environment overall and be able to adapt to new challenges out of the comfort zone.
• Able to develop procedures / processes to safely contribute to the skill transferring process of the workforce.
