Oyu Tolgoi is one of the most exciting projects in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits. The project, managed by Rio Tinto, is expanding underground. With a high demand of skills required to complete the project safely and successfully, Oyu Tolgoi is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia’s development and the prosperity of the Mongolian people.

The Opportunity

The Specialist Ventilation plays a key role within Underground Technical Services department by leading a team of Ventilation Engineers and Technicians to ensure safe underground working conditions through automated monitoring and data visualization. This includes deploying advanced instrumentation such as ultrasonic airflow sensors, Realtime DPM and Dust Monitors and multi-gas detection systems to optimize ventilation performance.

What the role entails

• Automated Ventilation Planning and Control: Develop and maintain mine ventilation using real-time monitoring and control systems. Integrate ventilation strategies with SCADA, Modbus RTU/TCP, and Ethernet/IP for centralized automation. Utilize automation data to optimize airflow and energy efficiency.
• Real-Time Monitoring and Data Visualization: Oversee automated ventilation monitoring systems, including ultrasonic airflow and multi-gas detection sensors. Use AVEVA PI Vision, VentSim Control and FactoryTalk View SE to analyze real-time ventilation performance. Implement alarm and notification systems to improve response times for ventilation deviations and achieve cost saving.
• Ventilation Surveys and Inspections: Compare primary and secondary ventilation surveys with automated data and digital reporting tools. Perform real-time air quality assessments with networked sensors, Dust and DPM continuous monitors.
• Performance Optimization and Predictive Maintenance: Continuously track and analyze ventilation performance through automation systems. Implement predictive maintenance and automated fault detection to reduce downtime.
• Control Room Integration and Re-Entry Management: Support daily re-entry assessments using real-time gas monitoring and ventilation data. Provide automated data-driven recommendations to control room personnel.
• Equipment Calibration and Maintenance: Ensure ventilation monitoring instruments are calibrated and maintained using the UG Monitoring Schedule and Compliance stipulation. Oversee calibration data recorded under the Power BI system to ensure 100% KPI Compliance.
• Safety, Risk Management, and Compliance: Implement real-time safety monitoring with regards to Gas Concentrations DPM and Dust levels. Ensure ventilation compliance with mine safety regulations and emergency response planning.
• Material Procurement and Infrastructure Management: Manage ventilation automation equipment procurement via SAP and inventory tracking. Ensure that ventilation automation equipment is ordered in a timeous manner so that planned instrumentation is installed when required.
• Training, Mentorship, and Continuous Improvement: Train and mentor junior engineers and technicians on ventilation automation technologies. Collaborate with mining, engineering, and IT teams to enhance automation capabilities. Including data visualization AVEVA PI Vision, VentSim control and Instrumentation Web User Interface.

What you will need for this role

• Undergraduate or equivalent or higher education obtained through degrees or diplomas from academic college or universities in instrumentation or automation.
• Beneficial to have a formal and recognized Mine Ventilation Qualifications
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in underground mining industry
• Strong background in SCADA, Factory Talk, Ventilation automation system, implementation, configuration and optimization
• Ensuring compliance with safety standards and operational requirements
• Experience in managing teams, coordinating with multiple departments
• Leading improvement projects
• Proficiency in conducting ventilation inspections, allowing effective calibration of automation sensors
