We’re looking for an Electrical Project Engineer to play a key role supporting Kennecott Smelter Operations in Magna, Utah. You’ll join a highly collaborative, site‑based team working alongside engineers, operators, trades, and leaders who are committed to safety, respect, and continuous improvement.
About the role
As a Project Engineer, Electrical, you will support safe and reliable smelter performance through the delivery of electrical, controls, and instrumentation projects and operational improvements.
This role sits at the intersection of Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance, partnering closely with site teams to improve safety, reliability, maintainability, and compliance of critical smelter assets.
Reporting to the Superintendent – Electrical Maintenance & Engineering, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers, planners, and maintenance professionals who will support your growth and development. Success in this role is built on strong technical fundamentals, curiosity, and a collaborative, team‑first mindset.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead and support electrical, controls, and instrumentation projects that improve Smelter operations and maintenance outcomes
- Define project scope, objectives, and execution plans in collaboration with Operations, Maintenance, and Reliability stakeholders
- Develop cost estimates and support project approvals across all phases (Study, Design, Execution, Commissioning, and Operational Readiness)
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and execution through commissioning and handover
- Coordinate contractors, consultants, and internal resources to ensure safe and efficient project delivery
- Monitor progress, manage change, and report performance across safety, schedule, cost, quality, and risk
- Integrate safety and risk management into all stages of project design and execution
- Support Management of Change (MOC) processes for system modifications
- Ensure compliance with Rio Tinto Standards, governance requirements, and site procedures
What you’ll bring
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related field OR 8+ years of equivalent practical experience in industrial operations, maintenance, or projects
- Experience supporting or delivering projects in an industrial environment
- Exposure to electrical, instrumentation, or control systems in processing or heavy industry
- Understanding of core project management practices (scope, schedule, cost, risk)
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and basic control documentation
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem solving
Preferred Experience (not required)
- Smelter, refining, wastewater, or similar process plant experience
- Experience working closely with maintenance and operations teams
- Knowledge of asset management systems and engineering standards
- Project management training or certification (e.g. PMP)

Where you’ll be working
Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum, tellurium and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
