About the role
The Reliability Engineer is responsible for improving equipment availability, performance, and lifecycle cost across mining operations. The role focuses on preventing unplanned downtime through reliability engineering principles, data driven decision making, and continuous improvement of maintenance strategies for mobile and fixed plant assets.
His main role is:
- Provide advanced reliability engineering expertise to optimize asset performance and reduce downtime for mobile and fixed plant equipment during Operations Readiness.
- Develop and implement reliability strategies, predictive maintenance programs, and defect elimination processes.
- Support commissioning, warranty management, and early-life reliability controls for critical assets.
- Train and mentor maintenance and operations teams on reliability principles and continuous improvement practices
Key Responsibilities
Reliability Strategy & Framework
- Develop reliability management plans and KPIs for mobile and process plant assets.
- Conduct RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) studies and create preventive maintenance strategies tailored to site conditions.
- Perform FMEA and criticality analysis for major systems and components.
- Provide technical input into shutdown planning and long‑term asset strategies.
Condition Monitoring & Data Analysis
- Implement predictive maintenance techniques including oil analysis, vibration monitoring, and thermography.
- Analyze reliability data and develop dashboards for KPIs such as MTBF, MTTR, and availability.
- Integrate condition monitoring data with CMMS/APM systems for effective decision-making.
- Develop dashboards and reports to track reliability trends and identify improvement actions.
- Ensure data accuracy, completeness, and proper failure coding.
Commissioning & Warranty Management
- Participate in commissioning activities to ensure defect-free handover and compliance with OEM specifications.
- Manage warranty claims and ensure timely recovery through root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Continuous Improvement & RCA
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for major failures and implement corrective actions.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce repeat failures and improve component life.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Electrical, or Reliability Engineering (or equivalent).
- Professional certifications in reliability (e.g., CRE, CRL, CMRP) are an advantage.
- 8+ years of experience in reliability engineering for mobile and process plant equipment in mining or heavy industry.
- Experience in operations readiness or greenfield projects preferred.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in CMMS/APM systems (SAP PM, Ellipse) and reliability analytics tools.
- Strong understanding of condition monitoring techniques and reliability methodologies (RCM, FMEA, RCA).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Language: English required; French desirable.
- Ability to work in remote mining environments and travel as required.

About the Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.
Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
