We are looking for a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Advisor to enhance the HSE standards at our aluminum smelter site, focusing on contractors. You'll play a pivotal role in the Contractor Management Excellence (CMX) team, coordinating HSE activities and providing guidance to both internal and external stakeholders on Rio Tinto's HSE processes, systems, and framework.

Reporting to the Contractor Management Excellence Team Lead, and working a Monday to Friday schedule, you will be:
- Supporting the implementation of Risk Reduction activities across site through coaching both Rio Tinto and contractor leaders on risk management tools (such as Management of Change, Risk Assessment, Leadership in the field, Job Hazard Analyses, and Standard Operating Procedures).
- Recommending and assisting with the implementation of best practices. Where appropriate, reviewing safety exposure when there are changes in practice, equipment, or process.
- Ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and company policies and standards.
- Facilitating incident investigations for contractor related incidents using investigation analysis methods (such as Essential Factors or 5 Why) to ensure effective sustainable controls are put in place to prevent re-occurrence. Monitoring incident trends and identifying opportunities to improve.
- Providing insights and preparation activities for HS&E audits and inspections (both internal and external).
- Facilitating and participating in Rio Tinto and contractor related educational avenues such as the monthly contractor meeting, periodic HSE meetings, Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee (JOHSC) meetings
- Training and educating Rio Tinto and contractor leaders on HSE programs such as the safety maturity model, Critical Risk Management (CRM), Potentially Fatal Incident (PFI) shares, Learning Critical Lessons (LCLs), Leadership in the Field (LiF) to ensure critical lessons are learned.
- Playing a key role in building a culture of interdependence.
What you’ll bring
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team, through promoting a culture of safety and a proactive approach to mitigating workplace risks
- A tertiary qualification in health, safety, engineering, or related field, or an equivalent combination of skills and experience (with minimum of a high-school diploma)
- In-depth knowledge of health and safety standards and regulations
- Experience working within a safety role or operational role in an industrial work setting.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively train, educate, and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels. Includes public speaking to groups of varying sizes.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify safety hazards and develop practical solutions.
- Detail-oriented and organized with the ability to coordinate the maintenance of accurate safety records and documentation amongst the contractors.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Possession of at least a B.C. Class 7 Driver's license or an equivalent from another province.
Please note that fly-in, fly-out opportunities are not available. However, a domestic relocation package will be offered to eligible candidates.

The base salary range for this role is $88,800 – $133,200 CAD in addition to allowances, bonus, equity, health or retirement benefits, and any other discretionary benefits offered at Rio Tinto. Our base salary ranges are based on role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by the skills, experience, and impact you bring to the role.
