We are looking for a site-based Environment Superintendent to join our HSE team at Boyne Smelters. In this role you will partner with our operations and lead the  Environmental Services Team to manage risk and deliver compliance. Reporting to the Business Partner HSE, and working as part of the leadership team, you will be:

• Accountable for the implementation of systems & processes to achieve compliance with the site Environmental Authority.

• Lead to build capability within Environmental services and more broadly at BSL to achieve success.

• Interfacing with on-site leaders to promote environmental goals and solve environmental issues.

• Engage with the regulator on behalf of the operation to maintain the license to operate.

• Oversee environmental monitoring programs to enable submission of compliance reports and data required to comply with our license to operate.

• Managing environmental issues, for example: surface water quality, stormwater management, monitoring, waste management, groundwater quality, emissions to air, incident reporting and hydrocarbon/contamination management

• Develop and maintain ISO14001 management system including implementation of aspects such as incident management, continuous improvement, internal audit and management review.

• Business partner with operational teams, lead the site Environmental Committee and influence leadership with Environmental management.  

• Providing environmental advice in the interpretation of legislation, acts and regulations

What you’ll bring

• A Bachelor’s degree in an Environmental, Engineering or related discipline with knowledge of key concepts theories and practices related to environmental aspects & impacts, risk management, State and Federal Legislation and environmental management systems

• Experience with Management Systems ISO 14000:1 and the Queensland Environment regulatory framework

• Relevant industry (large scale smelting, processing or chemical manufacturing) or mining experience (minimum 5-7 years)

• Demonstrated experience in leadership role.

• Willingness to get hands on with problem solving and improvement

• Strong attitude towards safety and improvement

• Excellent communication and partnering skills with the ability to work independently

• Resilience and a dynamic approach to problem solving

Where you’ll be working

Boyne Smelters Limited is Australia’s second largest aluminium smelter with a 1,000-person strong workforce. Located approximately 20km south east of Gladstone at Boyne Island on the Central Queensland coast, BSL produces around 500,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum.

Activities at BSL include manufacturing carbon anodes in the carbon plant, aluminium production (smelting) in reduction lines, and casting of molten material into aluminium products ready to ship. The smelter is connected via a conveyor belt to the Queensland Alumina Limited refinery for the supply of alumina.
