About the Role

Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s Railway Division team is seeking a hands-on and proactive Approvals Advisor to support the delivery of maintenance activities through effective approvals governance and field-based support. Based in Dampier and Tom Price operations, this role is critical in ensuring that all maintenance approval requirements are clearly understood and followed by field teams.

You will work closely with execution teams, project leads, and internal stakeholders to provide practical guidance on Approvals Request (AR) permit conditions, including environmental and heritage permit conditions, ensuring that maintenance activities are carried out safely, compliantly, and in line with regulatory and internal standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Support field teams by interpreting and communicating the requirements of environmental and heritage permits.

• Provide on-site guidance to ensure maintenance activities comply with permit conditions and environmental commitments.

• Monitor and report on water use, waste management, and rail civil material handling in accordance with approvals.

• Conduct site control verification checks to support approval requests and ensure readiness for maintenance execution.

• Participate in heritage and biological field surveys and contribute subject matter expertise where required.

• Lead or support audits, incident management processes, and continuous improvement initiatives related to approvals.

• Conduct drone surveys to capture aerial imagery and process data to support the approvals process.

• Utilise RTIO Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to understand Approvals boundaries, desktop work methodologies, review and create polygons for Approvals or mapping tasks.

• Utilise mobile devices as a control in field for Approvals boundaries.

What You’ll Bring

• A positive, solutions-focused mindset with a proactive approach to challenges.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence diverse teams and work effectively under pressure.

• Experience in an approvals or environmental coordination role within the resource sector.

• At least 2 years of experience in mining or heavy industry environments.

• Strong ability to translate technical permit conditions into practical field actions.

• Manual driver’s license.

Desirable:

• M1 and M3 Safe Working qualifications (training provided).

• CASA drone certification (training provided).

• Environmental or Civil qualifications.

• Cert II in Rail Infrastructure and prior rail experience.

• Surveying capabilities.

• Proficiency in geospatial software, preferably ESRI
