We are looking for a Senior Advisor to join our Mine Development & Studies team withing Mine Technical Services. This is a great opportunity for a candidate who is looking to take their technical ability to the next level, helping to lead technical best practice for the mine engineering discipline and influence the future of mining for Rio Tinto Iron Ore.

Reporting to the Principal Mining Development & Studies and working alongside other like-minded engineers, with the support of industry leading systems and processes you will be responsible for:

• Mine planning activities to support Mine Development Studies for the next tranche of Pilbara mines

• Strategic pit and dump strategy and design

• Approvals and resource development coordination

• Support to ore reserve reporting.

• Technical leadership including first line assurance and team coaching

• Undertake improvement projects to advance mine planning productivity and solve new challenges

You will be given opportunities to learn a grow as a technical professional.

What you’ll bring 

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Tertiary qualification in Engineering or equivalent.

• Demonstrated experience in mine planning, pit optimisation, design concepts and closure related planning in a large open pit mining environment.

• High degree of computer literacy, including knowledge of mine planning/design software (ATS, Vulcan/Deswik/Datamine, Whittle).

• Experience in mining studies and a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts that underpin value in the mining industry.

• Sound technical writing and presentation skills.

• Ability to share knowledge and guide peers to advance technical best practice.

• Ability to engage and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.

• Team player with “can do” attitude and self-motivation.

• Alignment to Rio Tinto values of courage, care and curiosity.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

• Experience in terrace or similar backfill driven mining methods
