About the role

We are currently seeking Expressions of Interest from qualified and experienced specialist Structural Geologist position within the Mine Technical Services, to produce, maintain and manage structural geology data collection, analysis, surface and pit mapping (including structural and geotechnical mapping in the field, using UAV and scan technologies, and reconciliation) and 3D modelling.

The successful applicants will be part of a growing and business-critical Geotechnical group aimed to develop, maintain and manage critical inputs into Mine Plan and the Studies projects. Your time will be focused on improving and refining stratigraphic and structural knowledge for geotechnical design, mine geology, resource geology, other geoscience disciplines, effective mine planning and optimisation of our operation and studies projects to ensure growth opportunities and the achievement of the immediate- and long-term business strategy.

Reporting to the Superintendent Geotechnical, you will be:

• Active engagement in SimFer safety systems, policies and adherence to Rio Tinto Standards, KRA’s for individual health and safety objectives and Personal Health and Safety Plan. The goal is to contribute toward an incident and injury free workplace and ensure the health and safety of all employees is not compromised.

• Accurate and timely geotechnical and structural geology data collection/validation utilising Rio Tinto/SimFer geotechnical and geology standards and systems for the purpose of delivery of an auditable and standardized data set.

• Appropriate storage of structural, geological and/or geotechnical data collected using the AcQuire databases to ensure corporate knowledge is retained within SimFer.

• Analysis, interpretation and construction of available data into computerised 3D structural geology models, both internally and in collaboration with Geology and Geotechnical Group.

• Active and on-going engagement and collaboration with Studies representatives, resource and mine geologists, geotechnical engineers and mine engineers to ensure structural inputs are appropriately and timely (as per Mine Plan and Studies schedule) communicated and embedded in terms of risk addressed and opportunities recognised.

• Development of standard systems of work and champion of continuous improvement projects on the data collection (i.e. pit, crest and surface mapping) to modelling process. Maintaining and expanding on workable synergies across other Geoscience and Technical Services groups within SimFer.

• Training/support/mentoring geotechnical and geoscience staff in geotechnical and structural model data collection, validation, storage, structural analysis, surface and pit mapping and interpretation and 3D modelling.

What You’ll Bring 

• A strong focus and commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

• Essential – Bachelor level Earth sciences, Geology or Structural Geology

• Desirable – Masters level Geology or Structural Geology degree

• A strong technical background with a focus on open cut mining/bulk commodities

• High-level experience in structural analysis

• High-level experience in construction of computerised 3D geological/stratigraphic models

• High-level experience in relevant software packages, and advanced in Leapfrog, Vulcan and WellCAD.

• Experience in geological/geotechnical drill program planning and implementation

• High-level experience in structural and geotechnical data gathering and validation (eg pit mapping, surface mapping, geology and geotechnical logging)

• Demonstrated project studies experience and ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team, positive approach to delivering to tight deadlines and strong communication and influencing capability.

• Demonstrated communication skills, including an ability to build relationships with both internal stakeholders and external consultancies.

• Excellent writing skills, attention to detail and an ability to problem solve

About the Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.

Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
