About your role
We are looking for a Senior E&I Project Design Engineer to join our project team delivering the world-class Oyu Tolgoi underground mine in Mongolia. This is a key role within the Owner’s team with the responsibility for the safe and timely delivery of the cave Production Infrastructure.
The Senior Engineer is accountable for providing technical expertise to the Underground engineering project team through the development of engineering detailed design.
Working within the OT Underground Project Management team, mining and construction disciplines you will:
- Ensure compliance to the OT HSE and Quality Management Plans
- Show outstanding leadership and commitment to HSE and Quality
- Liaise with the project controls personnel to provide accurate updates of progress
- Review and manage performance of external engineering providers
- Provide continuous guidance to engineering team members.
- Develop, oversee, review, and deliver electrical, control and instrumentation engineering designs, drawings, data sheets, project related specifications and other design documentation as required and in accordance with Mongolian, ISO and OT Site Standards
- Plan and deliver engineering designs for extraction level and haulage level infrastructure including; cave draw points, ore handling tipples, ore grizzlies, ROM ore bins, truck loading stations, mobile drill workshops, overhead crane runways, workshops, underground dewatering dams for the near term and future stages of the Oyu Tolgoi underground mine
- Manage activities and review engineering designs provided by external engineering providers. Review the engineering related documentation for compliance and completeness and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
- Liaise with Package engineers on providing technical support and review construction material specification for procurement packages and participate bid evaluation review process to attain successful material procurement.
- Produce engineering Basis of Design, and preliminary design drawings and documentation needed to inform the requirements for detailed design.
- Coordinate and lead studies on engineering projects as assigned
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have the following:
- Degree qualified electrical engineer with minimum 10 years of experience.
- At least 5 years of experience in the design and execution of mining and industrial construction projects with delivery of electrical, instrumentation and controls for mining and industrial applications to the project’s quality and performance requirements.
- Relevant Professional/Chattered Engineering registration with engineering bodies/councils
- A detailed understanding of engineering design deliverables including electrical drawings, datasheets, specifications, MTOs, scope of works for packages and construction.
- Experience in relevant design packages and software.
- Outstanding commitment to HSE and Quality.
- A demonstrated ability to work as part of an integrated delivery team.
- An ability to work autonomously within a highly complex project delivery environment.
- Excellent communication skills. English competency in both written and oral is essential.
- Experience working in developing countries with exposure in coaching and facilitating skills transfer to nationals.
- Excellent computer skills including proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite, AutoDesk AEC, Deswik, 3D design software.

Where you’ll be working
Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
