Oyu Tolgoi is one of the most exciting projects in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits. The project, managed by Rio Tinto, is expanding underground. With a high demand of skills required to complete the project safely and successfully, Oyu Tolgoi is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia’s development and the prosperity of the Mongolian people.

The Opportunity

The Senior Advisor Shutdown Management is responsible for providing expert guidance on the planning, readiness, and execution of underground maintenance shutdowns, ensuring effective structures, processes, and governance are in place across Maintenance, Operations, and Contractors. The role focuses on improving shutdown safety, coordination, and schedule certainty through disciplined work management and consistent execution.

The role also supports shutdown readiness through strong stakeholder engagement, manages execution risks, captures lessons learned, and coaches national leaders, ensuring alignment with OT standards.

What you will need for this role

• Supporting the planning and readiness of major Underground maintenance shutdowns.
• Ensuring shutdown scope, schedules, and work packs are clear, risk-based, and ready before execution.
• Facilitating shutdown readiness reviews, confirming access, isolations, materials, resources, and controls are in place.
• Providing on-site advisory support during shutdown execution to help resolve scope, sequencing, and coordination issues.
• Supporting coordination between Maintenance, Operations, and Contractors to ensure shutdown work is performed safely and efficiently.
• Monitoring shutdown performance against safety, schedule, cost, and critical path, and escalating risks early.
• Supporting post-shutdown reviews and capturing lessons learned to improve future shutdown performance.
• Strengthening shutdown governance, standards, and processes through continuous improvement.
