About the role
We are looking for a Specialist – UG Electrical Maintenance to join our diverse team. This is a key role within the Owner’s team, responsible for technical mentoring and engineering assurance across underground electrical and instrumentation systems, and for growing a diverse and capable team to support the lateral and mass excavation development ramp-up activities.
The Opportunity
The Specialist – Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) contributes by providing technical leadership, mentoring, and assurance for underground electrical infrastructure and control systems. The role is critical to support national leaders (Superintendents, Specialists, Senior Roles), ensuring compliance with standards, and supporting cost-effective delivery projects and maintenance programs while building sustainable national capability in E&I engineering and maintenance. Provide technical support, structured mentoring, and leadership development for national E&I Leadership roles. Ensure safe, compliant, and reliable operation of underground electrical and instrumentation systems, with a strong focus on high-voltage compliance, cost control, and capital project execution. The role contributes to SPS maturity, CRI compliance, and long-term asset reliability by embedding best practices in diagnostics, maintenance, and system optimization while building sustainable national capability.
What the role entails
This role is a great opportunity to take the next step in your career whilst working on a truly global project. Working 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off international (FIFO) roster, and reporting to Principal Advisor – Electrical, Instrumentation & Communication (Expat position), you will:
- Provide hands-on technical support and structured mentoring to national tradespeople, engineers, and emerging leaders.
- Support implementation and assurance of high-voltage switching standards and compliance protocols.
- Guide national Superintendents and Specialists in technical leadership, planning, and execution.
- Ensure compliance with site electrical standards and contribute to change management processes.
- Develop and deliver Safe Work Procedures (SWPs), Single Point Lessons, and competency verification tools.
- Assist with troubleshooting and defect elimination of control systems and HV reticulation issues.
- Participate in shutdown planning and execution, ensuring readiness and reliability of underground assets.
- Support cost control and capital project delivery through technical oversight and risk mitigation.
- Lead commissioning and upgrade initiatives for site-critical systems (e.g., MCCs, hoist redundancy, ventilation braking).
- Promote a strong safety culture and support Critical Risk Management activities.
- Coordinate with OEMs and vendors for troubleshooting, upgrades, and technical support.
- Collaborate with planners, engineers, and vendors to ensure reliable system performance.
- Support both underground and surface E&I systems as required.
- Lead skills development initiatives and contribute to structured succession planning for national E&I leadership roles.
- Identify competency gaps and implement targeted training and coaching to uplift team capability
What you will need for this role
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in E&I maintenance, including technical mentoring or supervisory responsibilities, preferably in underground mining or heavy industry.
- Electrical Engineering degree or trade certification
- Specialized training in underground E&I systems, HV Systems, diagnostics, and functional safety
- Functional Safety Technician or Engineer (preferred)
- HV Switching and Protection Systems Certification
- SAP or CMMS system training (preferred)
- Experience in mentoring and developing technical teams and leaders
- Understanding of SAP, work management and Shutdown management systems
- Experience in change management, continuous improvement, and capital project delivery.

Where you’ll be working
Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
