Job Summary

The role oversees all dewatering activities, including bore pump operations, bore cut downs, sump management, in-pit pumping setups and pipe movements. You will also support reliable water supply to camps, workshops and fixed processing plant infrastructure, ensuring continuity across the site. A key responsibility is ensuring dewatering requirements are integrated into the two-week plan, while also contributing to longer term mine water strategies across future cutbacks and expansions.

Key Responsibilities

• Operational Leadership: Direct daily dewatering activities, including in-pit water control, sump placement, pumping strategies, and integration into short-term mining and drill & blast plans.
• Infrastructure & Contractor Management: Oversee borefield operations, pump installations, relocations, pipe movements, and contractor performance for bore pumping, sump maintenance, and water transfer.
• Water Management & Forecasting: Monitor and forecast pumping capacity, inflows, rainfall impacts, and storage requirements while collaborating with Hydrogeology on groundwater behavior and borefield performance.
• Compliance & Continuous Improvement: Ensure adherence to Rio Tinto standards, environmental regulations, and drive improvements in pump performance, availability, and transfer efficiency.
• Strategic Development & Coaching: Support delivery of new dewatering infrastructure, contribute to long-term water strategies, and upskill national supervisors and engineers through structured coaching and field exposure.
• Contribute to longer term mine water strategies, including borefield expansion, major infrastructure planning, pit water risk assessments and pump fleet requirements
• Upskill national supervisors and engineers through structured coaching, field exposure and targeted development
• Maintain compliance with Rio Tinto standards, environmental controls and regulatory requirements

Qualifications and Experience

• Strong safety leadership with a practical, field-focused approach
• Several years of experience in mine dewatering, water operations or hydrogeology support
• Good understanding of how water impacts drill and blast, including wet holes, access constraints and pattern readiness
• Experience managing contractors and coordinating multiple pump setups, bores and pipe networks
• Ability to translate hydrogeological recommendations into effective field actions
• Strong planning and prioritisation skills in changing conditions
• Clear communication and confidence working across operational teams
• Good cost awareness
• It will be advantageous if you have
• Experience in large open pit dewatering or high rainfall operations
• Exposure to bore drilling programs and groundwater monitoring
• Familiarity with telemetry systems, water balance tools or SCADA
• French or Mandarin language skills
• Engineering or hydrology qualifications (Mining, Civil, Environmental, Hydrogeology), but not required

About the Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.

Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
