Oyu Tolgoi is one of the most exciting projects in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits. The project, managed by Rio Tinto, is expanding underground. With a high demand of skills required to complete the project safely and successfully, Oyu Tolgoi is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia’s development and the prosperity of the Mongolian people.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Superintendent Planning to support the UG Mine Design & Planning team. The opportunity focuses on coaching and mentoring the national leaders in all aspects of Mine Planning whilst building best practice processes compliant to the Mine Planning Framework. The role centres on Budget and Long Term Plan delivery as well as leading the team to become best in class regarding Mine Planning and Caving excellence. This is a leadership role that requires suitable background experience in large complex UG mine operations.

What the role entails

This role is a great opportunity to take the next step in your career on a truly global project. Working 5 days on, 2 off roster residential in Ulaanbaatar with FIFO to site or FIFO internationally on 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off roster. The role will report to the Manager – Underground Planning.

Support daily functions of the UG Production Planning team, reporting to the Manager – Mine Design & Planning.

• Support & coach team members on daily tasks and career development through Rio Tinto's established processes.
• Develop and maintain the Production Model required for Long Term Production Planning and Budget planning processes compliant to the Rio Tinto Mine Planning Framework and Theory of Constraints
• Ensure Production and Cave Draw Strategies are compliant to the constraints and requirements of the business Long Term Plan, Operational constraints, and geotechnical constraints and guidance
• Built robust QAQC checking processing compliant to the Rio Tinto Mine Planning Framework
• Develop and maintain team competencies and packages compliant to the Rio Tinto Mine Planning Framework
• Support the Monthly Planning team in the development of Rolling Monthly Plans with mentoring and leadership and provide guidance on reconciliation of that plan
• Develop and sustain the Planning engagement model as per the Mine Planning Calendar to ensure a highly consultative and integrated process with project stakeholders.
• Coordinate the development of guidelines to enable accurate Risk Adjusted P50 Planning in both ramp up and steady state phases of the mine plan
• Regular underground inspections of mining activities and also to provide visible leadership in the field
• Assist and manage improvement projects within the scope of the mining team.
• Develop & improve MOS documentation to enable effective department function.

What you will need for this role

To succeed in this role, you will have:

• Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or a related discipline (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent)
• Over 10 years of relevant industry experience, supported by substantial practical knowledge
• Strong background in Mine Planning, with demonstrated expertise in Budgeting, Life of Mine and Long Term planning
• Extensive operational experience in mass mining methods, particularly Block Caving or Panel Caving
• Highly proficient in PCBC software, with advanced modelling and scheduling capabilities
• Deswik Advanced Scheduling experience
• In depth understanding of the Theory of Constraints and System Capacity calculations
• Minimum of 5 years Operational/Technical experience in underground mining environments
• Proven problem solving skills with a solutions mindset
• Willingness and ability to work in remote locations for extended periods
• Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences
• Experienced in working within multicultural teams and committed to fostering an inclusive and collaborative work environment
