About the role

Rio Tinto is on a journey to transform our partnerships with Traditional Owners, including evolving our participation agreements. This role is key to driving that transformation, creating and executing strategies to modernise our ways of working in collaboration with Traditional Owner groups.

As a Senior Advisor within the Traditional Owner Partnerships team at Rio Tinto Iron Ore, you’ll have the opportunity to influence and shape change. If you're ready to contribute to a dynamic, forward-thinking team, join us in shaping the future of our Traditional Owner relationships.

This role will provide strategic advice and support, with a focus on the analysis and drafting of contracts and agreements between Traditional Owner Groups and Rio Tinto.

Showcasing your expertise in contractual drafting, detailed analysis and legal interpretation, this role is crucial in ensuring our collaborations with Traditional Owner Groups are respectful, fair, and beneficial for all involved parties. By taking on this role, you will be demonstrating a commitment to maintaining a high standard of integrity and ethical decision-making in every situation. You will have exceptional written skills, the ability to influence effectively, and be a self-motivated individual.

Reporting to the Lead Agreements Delivery, Monitoring, and Compliance, on a 5:2 roster, you will:

• Lead and design the provision of strategic advice, research and drafting of contracts and Agreements

• Research and interpret governing legislation, terms and conditions, as well as best practise, to determine impacts on strategic advice.

• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop fit for purpose agreements and contracts.

• Actively lead technical compliance to existing agreements and commitments.

• Develop and implement strategic plans, including monitoring frameworks.

• Write internal papers to influence strategy and identify opportunities for improvement.

What you will bring

• Tertiary qualifications in Law, Commerce, Anthropology, or a related discipline.

• Substantial experience in agreement drafting and implementation

• Skills in influencing, negotiation, risk, and conflict management.

• Proficiency in writing internal papers.

• Proven project management experience.

• Strong research capabilities.

• Extensive stakeholder management experience.

• Awareness of legislative/regulatory compliance.

• Business analysis and investigation experience.

• A current C Class manual driver’s license

• Legal related qualification highly desirable (although not essential)

Where you’ll be working

This role is based in Perth, at our head office in Central Park, and working Monday to Friday.

In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, we own a world-class, integrated network of 17 mines, four independent port terminals, a rail network spanning nearly 2,000 kilometres and related infrastructure – all designed to respond rapidly to changes in demand. We are one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of iron ore.
