Role Purpose 

The Specialist Mine Inspector is responsible for conducting daily mine inspections to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient mining operations. The role focuses on maintaining high standards of pit safety, operational compliance, hazard identification, and workforce capability development. The Specialist Mine Inspector provides technical oversight and mentoring to national personnel, ensuring mine operations are conducted in accordance with statutory requirements, company standards, and industry best practices. 

This will be a 4:2 International FIFO role back to home base. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Conduct comprehensive daily inspections of active mining areas, haul roads, waste dumps, pit walls, benches, stockpiles, and associated mining infrastructure. 

• Verify compliance with statutory regulations, site safety management systems, and operational standards. 

• Assess ground conditions, pit stability, traffic management, and operational controls to ensure safe mine operation. 

• Monitor mining activities and identify unsafe conditions, practices, or deviations from approved procedures. 

• Ensure corrective actions are implemented and verified in a timely manner. 

• Complete detailed daily mine inspection reports

• Escalate critical safety risks and operational issues to site leadership. 

• Participate in incident investigations and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. 

• Maintain accurate inspection records and statutory documentation. 

• Train, mentor, and develop national team members in: 

-Pit inspection standards 

-Open pit mining best practices 

-Safe mine operation principles 

-Hazard identification and risk management 

-Statutory compliance requirements 

-Safety leadership and reporting standards 

• Conduct field-based coaching and competency assessments. 

• Support the development of local inspection capability and succession planning. 

• Promote and demonstrate a strong safety culture across all mining activities. 

• Lead by example in the application of safe work practices and risk management. 

• Conduct workplace safety interactions and engage personnel in proactive hazard identification. 

• Ensure compliance with all Health, Safety, Environment, and Community (HSEC) requirements. 

• Provide independent oversight of daily mining operations. 

• Review mining activities against approved plans and operating procedures. 

• Support operational teams by identifying opportunities to improve safety, compliance, and operational effectiveness. 

• Liaise with mine management, supervisors, geotechnical personnel, and contractors to address inspection findings. 

• Completion of daily mine inspection activities. 

• Timely close-out of identified hazards and corrective actions. 

• Compliance with statutory and company safety standards. 

• Quality and accuracy of inspection reports. 

• Reduction in repeat hazards and safety incidents. 

• Development and competency improvement of national team members. 

• Positive audit and regulatory inspection outcomes. 

Qualifications & Experience

• Current Quarry Manager Certificate of Competency or Open Cut Examiner Certification (or equivalent statutory qualification). 

• Minimum 10 years' experience in open pit mining operations, mine inspection, mine supervision, or statutory compliance roles. 

• Strong knowledge of open pit mining methods, pit safety standards, and mine operational practices. 

• Demonstrated experience conducting mine inspections and hazard assessments. 

• Proven ability to train, mentor, and develop operational personnel. 

• Sound understanding of mining legislation, risk management, and safety management systems. 

• Diploma or Degree in Mining Engineering, Mining Operations, or a related discipline. 

• Experience working in remote or international mining operations. 

• Training and assessment qualifications would be advantageous. 

• Proficiency in French (written and verbal) would be highly desirable.

About the Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.

Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
