Oyu Tolgoi has been one of the most exciting projects in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits. The project, managed by Rio Tinto, is expanding underground. With a high demand for skills required to complete the project safely and successfully, Oyu Tolgoi is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia’s development and the prosperity of the Mongolian people.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a Superintendent, Planning and Scheduling, to support the UG Operations Project Management. The Superintendent – Planning & Scheduling will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and managing the integrated master schedule for underground Panel 1 and Panel 2 cave construction and ramp-up projects, ensuring alignment across project and operational teams. This role acts as the key link between the Underground Operations Project Management Department and other underground functions. The role will be responsible for providing clarity, coordination, and direction. The incumbent will also be responsible for providing training to project leads in schedule development, ensuring that all underground projects are delivered safely, on time, and within scope.
What the role entails
This role is a great opportunity to take the next step in your career on a truly global project. The working roster will be negotiable; it might be FIFO or Ulambataar-based. The role will report to the Principal Advisor, Project Controls. Your responsibilities will be:
- Develop, integrate, and maintain the underground master schedule, covering all key projects and operational interfaces.
 - Serve as the central scheduling authority, ensuring alignment between project plans, operational requirements, and contractor schedules.
 - Monitor project progress, identify variances or risks, and recommend corrective actions to maintain delivery against targets.
 - Facilitate communication between the Underground Project Management Department and other underground teams to ensure coordinated execution.
 - Develop and maintain the Basis of Schedule documentation and ensure alignment with Group Scheduling Standards for each project phase.
 - Integrate scheduling with cost control plans, ensuring alignment with cost management objectives.
 - Monitor detailed schedules, providing accurate reports on progress, variance to plan, root causes, and remedial actions.
 - Track and assess potential risks in the broader environment that may impact the schedule.
 - Prepare and present weekly and monthly progress reports, dashboards, and forecasts to project leadership and senior management.
 - Develop, implement, and optimize project controls systems, tools, and processes to support effective planning, tracking, and reporting.
 - Champion safety, regulatory compliance, and risk management in all planning and scheduling activities.
 
What you will need for this role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- Diploma/Degree in Technical (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Construction) field of study (NQF6)
 
Scheduling certification will be an advantage.
- Over 8 years in Project Controls and our Project Management roles, including collaboration with both Operations and EPCM teams.
 - Engagement in large-scale mining and construction mega-projects ($2 billion+), preferably in international and emerging market contexts.
 - Strong expertise in cost, change, and schedule/progress management.
 - Proven leadership experience: leading and developing teams, setting direction, prioritizing objectives, coaching, and motivating team members.
 - Skilled in work management process analysis and improvement program facilitation.
 - Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently or as part of a team.
 - Strong communication skills with the ability to engage and build relationships across all organizational levels.
 - Capabilities to work with Primavera P6 and or MS Project.
 - Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, etc.).
 - Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in remote, high-pressure, and multicultural environments.
 - Experience in facilitating and implementing process improvement initiatives.

Where you’ll be working
Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open-pit and underground mine. The site is located in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
