About the role
We are looking for Specialist Projects and Automated Production Systems to join our diverse team. This is a key role within the Owner’s team with the responsibility of growing a diverse and capable team to continue the ramp up of our Remote and Autonomous Production Systems in our underground environment.
The primary focus of this role is to support and grow our existing capability needed to maintain and ramp up advanced technology and automation, and to help create a passionate and engaged team within Underground Production Operations.
Our vision is to build a world class technology and automation capability including people, processes and technology, which will support underground mining performance and safety, and play a key role in achieving mining targets using modern technology.

The Opportunity
- Guide the creation and implementation of our underground remote and autonomous equipment strategies.
- Support and mentor cross functional teams of engineers, analysts and third-party technology vendors, combined with end-users (operators, maintainers, supervisors, leaders, engineers) to deliver remote and automated equipment projects that improve business results and maintain the highest levels of safety.
- Establish partnerships that drive business value priorities, and pioneer technology solutions that will provide value at velocity.
- Build knowledge, understanding and expertise in remote and automated equipment within the UG Mining team.
- Identify and scope potential projects – working from the decision backwards, investigate the problem to be solved, the decision to be changed, the data and systems that underpin the business and then architect, design and deliver products that deliver the objective.
- Solve complex and challenging problems by working closely with operators, maintainers, engineers and other subject-matter-experts.
- Work to establish the roadmap, roles, capabilities, skills and culture required for the success of remote and automated equipment within the underground mining organisation.
What the role entails
4 weeks on/ 2 weeks off international FIFO arrangement and reporting to Superintendent Production Readiness, you will:
- Project Support
- Assist in the planning and execution of technology-focused production projects, including automated loaders and collision avoidance systems.
- Work under the guidance of senior team members to collect and analyze data related to production technologies.
- Participate in project meetings and contribute to documentation and reporting tasks.
- Technology Integration Assistance
- Assist in monitoring and troubleshooting automated loaders and collision avoidance systems under supervision.
- Collect and analyze basic operational data to identify areas for improvement.
- Work collaboratively with the production and maintenance teams to support technology implementation.
- Skill Development and Training
- Engage in structured training programs on underground mining technologies and safety practices.
- Shadow experienced team members to learn technical skills related to production technology and automation.
- Contribute to knowledge-sharing sessions with other junior team members.
- Safety and Risk Management
- Implement safety-focused initiatives within production projects, particularly concerning collision avoidance technology and automation.
- Ensure all technology systems comply with mine safety standards and contribute to a safe working environment.
- Actively promote safety awareness and best practices within the production team.
- Data Collection and Reporting
- Analyze performance data from automated and collision avoidance systems to generate insights that drive productivity and safety improvements.
- Collect and document operational data from production technology systems.
- Assist in preparing reports on system performance, safety incidents, and project updates.

- Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline is preferred, but progressive industry experience will be considered

It will be beneficial if you have:
- 5+ years’ experience in underground mines managing development, production and rehabilitation activities
- Advanced experience with Sandvik Automine and MultiLite autonomous mining systems.
- Experience working in a block cave or underground mining environment.
- Knowledge of collision avoidance technology, fleet management, and digital mine systems.
- Production Loader or Haul Truck Operator (with knowledge of automated systems)
- Experience in working with underground mining or construction projects, and mobile equipment maintenance processes.
- Have a proven track record of leading, designing and delivering complex, large scale remote and automated equipment implementation projects, including the required cultural and process change, preferably within metals and mining organizations.
- Industry-Specific Safety & Operations Certifications
- Skills in project management and technology integration.

Where you’ll be working
Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
