About the role:
-
Lead the Central Asset Management engineering function, ensuring asset strategies, standards, and reliability frameworks are aligned across the mine, processing plant, rail, and infrastructure assets (as applicable).

Oversee the development and implementation of asset maintenance strategies, lifecycle plans, and engineering governance to support safe, reliable, and cost-effective operations.
-
Drive improvements in asset performance, reliability, availability, and maintainability, ensuring long-term operational sustainability.
-
Provide technical leadership to reliability engineers, maintenance engineers, and asset specialists across the operation.
-
Ensure that asset risks are identified, controlled, and communicated through structured engineering and reliability processes.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Lead the engineering and reliability team within Central Asset Management.
-
Develop and maintain asset management plans, asset hierarchies, and engineering standards.
-
Oversee asset data quality and integrity across CMMS and engineering systems.
-
Ensure uniform engineering practices across mine, plant, and infrastructure assets.
-
Champion asset lifecycle thinking and support long-term capital planning.
-
Lead reliability frameworks including:
-
RCM (Reliability-Centered Maintenance)
-
FMEA/FMECA
-
Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
-
Condition monitoring programs
-
Track and improve reliability KPIs (MTBF, MTTR, availability, downtime analysis).
-
Identify chronic issues ("bad actors") and lead systematic elimination plans.
-
Drive optimization of maintenance strategies with evidencebased decision making.
-
Develop and approve preventive/predictive maintenance strategies and task lists.
-
Establish engineering governance for change management (MoC), critical spares, and technical standards.
-
Oversee technical reviews of maintenance plans, shutdown scopes, and major overhaul strategies.
-
Ensure uniform application of asset management protocols across all sites.
-
Provide engineering support for mobile, fixed plant, utilities, and infrastructure assets.
-
Troubleshoot complex technical issues and support operational problem-solving.
-
Review engineering design changes, upgrades, and equipment modifications.
-
Interface with OEMs, EPCM contractors, and vendors for technical support and warranty claims.
-
Ensure CMMS (SAP/Pronto) master data is accurate and continuously improved.
-
Oversee analytics dashboards and reporting related to asset performance.
-
Implement digital tools supporting reliability, condition monitoring, and predictive maintenance.
-
Ensure data-driven decision-making in maintenance and engineering planning.
-
Enforce compliance with engineering safety standards, isolation procedures, and maintenance protocols.
-
Lead risk assessments for critical assets and ensure controls are implemented.
-
Ensure compliance with national regulations, engineering codes, and OEM specifications.
-
Participate in investigations for equipment failures, incidents, and near misses.
-
Lead, mentor, and develop engineers, maintenance planners, and reliability specialists.
-
Strengthen technical capability across the operation through training and coaching.
-
Promote collaboration between Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, and Operations teams.
-
Build a culture of disciplined engineering practices and continuous improvement.
What you will bring:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering: Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Reliability, or related discipline.
-
Professional engineering registration (preferred but not mandatory).
-
Training in asset management frameworks:
-
ISO 55000
-
RCM
-
Reliability engineering certifications (e.g., CMRP)
-
Safety certifications (NEBOSH, IOSH) are advantageous.
-
10+ years’ experience in engineering or maintenance leadership roles within mining or heavy industry.
-
Strong background in reliability engineering, asset management, and maintenance strategy development.
-
Experience managing diverse asset classes:
-
Fixed plant (crushers, conveyors, screening, processing)
-
Mobile equipment (trucks, loaders, cranes)
-
Power systems, utilities, or infrastructure (advantage)
-
Demonstrated experience with greenfield projects, commissioning, and ramp-up phases.
-
Proven track record implementing asset performance improvement programs.
-
Strong knowledge of reliability tools: RCA, FMEA, Weibull analysis, criticality assessments.
-
Proficiency with CMMS/ERP systems (SAP/Pronto).
-
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, electrical schematics, and OEM manuals.

Understanding of condition monitoring technologies (vibration, thermography, oil analysis).
-
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills using data-driven methods.

Strong safety leadership and commitment to asset integrity.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Able to coach, influence, and uplift technical teams.

Strategic thinker with strong organizational discipline.

About the Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.
Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
