About the Role
Reporting to the Utilities Superintendent, the Senior Engineer Water is a Technical support role that provides strategy and support to the Weipa Utilities team who oversee management of a complex portfolio of water, waste water, tailings and fuel infrastructure. These facilities include a large number of Tailings and Water Storage dams, 5 Water Supply Schemes, multiple Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants, Fuel infrastructure and other ancillary operations associated with the Town of Weipa and the Andoom and Amrun Mining Operations.
The role will be accountable for providing technical input, oversite and advice on the operational management of the potable water, process water and wastewater treatment systems across site, including:
- Performance and KPI monitoring of each facility
- Coordination between the operations and the Capital Project activities on the water and wastewater assets
- Input into the 5-year capital forecast
- Regulatory correspondence and compliance
- Development and upkeep of the Goldsim water balance model
- Annual water license reporting
- Maintain technical documentation (Operational Manuals, Water Management Plans, Emergency Response Plans).
- Support site to maintain regulatory compliance and Rio Tinto standards.
- Improve data management by improving existing tools and participating in the implementation of the data management system.
- Manage specialized external consultants.
The role requires strong technical capability with regards to wastewater and water treatment plants and water management.
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- A bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Civil or Chemical Engineering.
- Experience in water and wastewater treatment.
- Exposure to regulatory reporting and relevant standards surrounding potable and wastewater.
- Exposure and previous experience with SCADA systems, Factory talk and Citect (desired but not essential).

About our Weipa Operations
Our Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tons of bauxite.
Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce—including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.
The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape
