About the role
We are looking for a Smelter Electrical Specialist – Engineering & Maintenance to support the engineering, reliability, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical, instrumentation, and control systems across Kennecott Copper Smelter Operations.
Reporting to the Electrical Maintenance Superintendent / Engineering Manager, and working collaboratively with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams, you will provide subject‑matter expertise across low, medium, and high voltage systems, industrial instrumentation, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and control systems in a high‑temperature, high‑power manufacturing environment.
Role responsibilities

Engineer, maintain, and troubleshoot low, medium, and high voltage electrical systems, including switchgear, MCCs, transformers, substations, and power distribution networks

Support electrical system upgrades, expansions, and capital projects, including commissioning and startup activities
-
Troubleshoot, commission, and optimize Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and large motor systems in heavy industrial service
-
Maintain and troubleshoot field instrumentation (temperature, pressure, flow, level, and analytical devices), including calibration support and documentation
-
Diagnose signal integrity, grounding, and electrical noise issues common in high‑power smelter environments
-
Troubleshoot and modify PLC‑based systems using RS Logix / Studio 5000 (Allen‑Bradley)
-
Support Emerson DeltaV DCS, including I/O troubleshooting, control logic, loop tuning, and system performance improvements
-
Collaborate with operations and engineering partners to improve process stability, alarm management, and system reliability
-
Support predictive and preventative maintenance strategies and lead or contribute to root cause analysis (RCA) of recurring failures
-
Develop and maintain technical documentation, including drawings, standards, and procedures
-
Provide technical guidance and coaching to electrical technicians and maintenance team members
-
Promote and reinforce electrical safety practices, including LOTO, energized work controls, and arc‑flash mitigation
-
Participate in hazard assessments, audits, and incident investigations, ensuring compliance with regulatory, environmental, and corporate standards
About you

A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent practical experience

Minimum 5–10 years’ experience in heavy industrial or smelting environments

Experience working with:

Low, medium, and high voltage electrical systems

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
-
Industrial instrumentation
-
PLC troubleshooting using RS Logix / Studio 5000

Emerson Delta V distributed control systems
-

Ability to read and interpret electrical one‑lines, schematics, loop diagrams, and control narratives
-
Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving capability, particularly in time‑critical operational situations
-
Clear and confident communication skills when engaging with operations, maintenance, engineering, and leadership teams
-
Ability to work independently and prioritise work in a 24/7 continuous operation
-
High attention to safety, quality, and detail

Valid U.S. driver’s license

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter, and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum, and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
