Specialist GIS Data & Development – Spatial Projects
- Play an important role in the development, management and continuous improvement of Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s enterprise spatial data, ensuring trusted and fit-for-purpose information is available to support operational and technical decision-making.
- Apply your GIS and spatial data expertise across enterprise datasets, geodatabases, data quality, spatial analysis and automated workflows.
- Work with a diverse network of GIS professionals, technical specialists, data custodians and business stakeholders to improve spatial data, models and processes across Rio Tinto Iron Ore.

About the role
We are looking for a Specialist GIS Data & Development – Spatial Projects to support the development, management and continuous improvement of enterprise spatial data and associated workflows.
In this role, you will work across the spatial data lifecycle, including data capture and transformation, geodatabase management, validation, analysis, publishing and integration. You will help ensure enterprise spatial datasets are accurate, current, traceable and available for operational and technical use.
You will also contribute to the development of spatial analysis models, automated data workflows and data-quality controls, working closely with GIS team members, data custodians, system owners and business stakeholders.
What you'll be doing
Reporting to the Principal GIS Data & Development, you will:
- Manage and maintain enterprise vector and raster datasets through their lifecycle, including capture, transformation, validation, storage, publishing and archiving.
- Support the administration and continuous improvement of enterprise geodatabases, including schemas, versioning, performance, access, auditing and data cleansing.
- Develop and maintain spatial data standards covering metadata, naming, lineage, ownership, access and enterprise content.
- Build and maintain repeatable and auditable spatial data workflows incorporating validation, QA/QC, exception handling, monitoring and logging.
- Support the development and maintenance of spatial analysis models and workflows, including cumulative impact assessments, to support environmental and operational decision-making.
- Monitor spatial data quality, investigate issues and root causes, and implement controls and improvements to reduce recurring data errors.
- Support spatial data migrations, integrations and publishing activities while maintaining data accuracy, lineage, security and service continuity.
- Provide specialist GIS advice and troubleshooting relating to data models, data loading, validation, storage, analysis, publishing and appropriate use.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve spatial data tools, processes and workflows, reducing manual effort and improving consistency and reliability.
- Work collaboratively with GIS stakeholders, data custodians and technical teams to translate business requirements into fit-for-purpose spatial data solutions.

Required for Success

- Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining enterprise spatial datasets within a complex operational or technical environment.
- Strong experience with ArcGIS Enterprise, enterprise geodatabases and spatial services, including publishing and managing enterprise GIS content.
- Strong experience with spatial data models and vector and raster data management.
- Demonstrated experience with FME Form and FME Flow, including developing, maintaining and troubleshooting spatial data transformation and automated workflows.
- Experience with Python, ArcGIS Notebooks or similar scripting and analytical tools to develop spatial analysis and data-processing workflows.
- Experience with spatial data validation and QA/QC, including investigating data-quality issues and implementing sustainable improvements.
- Strong understanding of spatial data governance, metadata, lineage and data-quality principles.
- Strong spatial analysis and problem-solving capability, with the ability to translate business requirements into practical GIS solutions.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with technical and business users.
Helpful for Success
- Experience developing or maintaining complex spatial analysis models and analytical workflows.
- Knowledge of environmental, approvals, resource development or operational business processes supported by GIS.
- Experience supporting spatial data migrations and integrations with other enterprise systems.
- Tertiary qualification in GIS, Geospatial Science, Information Systems, Computer Science or a related discipline.
