MPP Electrical Advisor

Job Summary

The Advisor plays a critical role through safely leading the field activities with real time decision making to ensure effective operational strategy implementation while meeting production targets. This role impacts overall cultural behavior, productivity and cost efficiency with responsibilities including but not limited to executing daily/weekly plan and report efficiently, mentoring and coaching national team development while maintaining equipment reliability and compliance with regulatory and SimFer electrical safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Safety & Compliance

• Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and conduct regular safety audits, empowering stop of work authority while monitoring and driving measurables KPIs such as AIFR below threshold limit and LDI free.
• Perform electrical isolations, LOTOTO procedures, and verification checks before work starts.
• Ensure compliance with site electrical standards, OEM requirements, and national/international regulations.
• Conduct risk assessments (JHAs), field-level hazard analysis, and participate in incident investigations.
• Verify earthing, bonding, and lightning protection systems are maintained and tested.

Electrical Maintenance & Troubleshooting

• Lead execution of planned, preventive, and corrective maintenance on:
  • HV/LV switchgear (up to site-standard voltage levels)
  • Transformers, MCCs, distribution boards
  • Motors, soft starters, VFDs, UPS systems, and power factor correction units
  • Lighting systems, earthing systems, and standby power systems
• Diagnose electrical faults using test instruments, interpret results, and take corrective actions.
• Support maintenance on processing plant equipment such as crushers, screens, conveyors, pumps, and automated systems.
• Assist in motor overhauls, cable replacements, terminations, and field equipment upgrades.

Commissioning & Ramp-Up Support

• Support pre‑commissioning and commissioning of electrical systems including:
  • Switchgear energization
  • Motor rotation checks and no-load tests
  • Instrument loop checks
  • Interlock verification and protection relay testing
• Validate as-built documentation, redlines, and handover packets from project team.
• Support ramp-up troubleshooting and defect elimination for major equipment.

Documentation & Reporting

• Complete work orders, inspection sheets, and job reports in the CMMS (SAP/Pronto or site equivalent).
• Update electrical drawings, SLDs, cable schedules, and equipment registers after modifications.
• Track electrical performance KPIs (MTTR, MTBF, downtime analysis).
• Report hazards, system deficiencies, and improvement opportunities to supervisors.

Reliability, Improvements & Technical Support

• Perform condition monitoring activities such as:

• Infrared thermography    
• Partial discharge assessments    
• Insulation resistance and continuity tests     
• Vibration and load analysis (with multi-disciplinary teams)

• Contribute to reliability-cantered maintenance (RCM) and root cause analysis (RCA) implementation.
• Recommend design modifications, upgrades, and improvements to enhance equipment reliability.
• Support procurement in specifying electrical spares, components, and tools.
• Lead shutdown readiness, planning and execution

Education & Certifications

• Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrotechnology, or Electrical Trades (or equivalent).
• Recognized trade qualification as an Electrician (where applicable).
• HV Switching qualification (advantage).
• Relevant safety certifications: LOTOTO, Working at Heights, Confined Space, First Aid.
• Proven experience with ABB equipment is an asset.

Experience

• 5–10+ years’ experience in electrical maintenance in mining, heavy industry, energy, or processing plants.
• Hands-on experience with:

• HV/LV power distribution
• VFDs, soft starters, MCCs
• Motor control and protection systems
• Processing plants (crushers, conveyors, pumps) or mobile mining equipment interfaces

• Commissioning or greenfield project experience is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with SCADA/DCS, PLC interfaces, and instrument loops (advantage).

Technical Skills

• Ability to read electrical drawings, SLDs, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• Skilled with electrical test equipment (insulation testers, mustimeters, relay testers, IR cameras).
• Knowledge of protection systems, circuit design, and electrical load calculations.
• Working knowledge of CMMS systems and basic computer competency.

About the Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.

Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
