MPP Mechanical Advisor

Position Overview

The Advisor is a hand on subject matter expert leading the field mechanical maintenance activities with real time decision making to ensure safe operational procedure implementation and KPI metrics are met. The advisor lead daily maintenance execution of fixed plant equipment, including but not limited to crushers, conveyors, balance machines, TLO, hydraulics and gearboxes.

Key Responsibilities

• Enforce safety protocol while leading a team of technicians to maximize equipment uptime.
• Perform routine inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on static and rotary fixed plant equipment like mills, screens, crushers, and hydraulic systems.
• Execute and improve PM schedules to prevent equipment breakdowns, minimizing mechanical downtime to meet production targets and extend asset lifespans.
• Analyze equipment malfunctions utilizing technical manuals, schematics, and specialized diagnostic tools to determine root causes.
• Lead plant shutdowns scheduling and execution to ensure major overhauls and installations are completed safely and efficiently.
• Identify, order, and manage the inventory of necessary mechanical spares, tools, and materials required for repairs.
• Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement aligned to operational excellence  
• Drive continuous improvement in safety, productivity, and cost efficiency across all processing activities. 

Leadership & Team Supervision

• Mentor national supervisor development and mentor maintenance technician in building local capability for reliable operation.
• Develop and implement a competency development program promoting a culture of safety, ownership and accountability.
• Conduct regular performance evaluations in field to ensure knowledge succession

Mechanical Maintenance Management

• Execute preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance of all mechanical plant equipment, including crushers, conveyors, pumps, mills, thickeners, HVAC systems, piping, and rotating equipment.
• Drive shutdown, major overhaul planning, coordination, and execution.

• Provide advanced troubleshooting of mechanical faults, failures, and recurring plant issues.
• Identify root causes and collaborate with engineering to optimize equipment life cycles.
• Ensure all equipment modifications comply with OEM standards and engineering best

Safety & Compliance

• Participates in HSE awareness by ensuring the correct SOP’s/SWP’s and or JHA’s are used and is firmly in place for all tasks
• Enforce rigorous safety procedures, including LOTOTO, permits-to-work, and confined-space protocols.
• Ensure compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.

Continuous Improvement

• Drive continuous improvement initiatives with availability focus above 95%, reducing downtime, and extending asset life with overall equipment effectiveness above 85%
• Implement modern maintenance strategies such as condition monitoring, RCM, or asset health programs.
• Track and report KPIs (Schedule Compliance, MTBF, MTTR, equipment availability etc.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

• Qualified Mechanical trade, Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or equivalent experience.
• 10–15 years of mechanical maintenance experience in mining, mineral processing, or heavy industrial facilities
• Proven experience in Rio Tinto (RTIO) Iron ore Product groups IO is highly advantageous.
• Proven experience leading multidisciplinary maintenance teams towards harm zero.
• Strong technical knowledge of rotating equipment, hydraulics, piping systems, lubrication, and welding/fabrication.
• Experience working with CMMS platforms such as SAP, Pronto, or Maximo.

Preferred

• Experience with major shutdowns and plant commissioning.
• Certification in Reliability Engineering, Asset Management, or Maintenance Planning.
• Familiarity with international standards (API, ASME, ISO).
• Exposure to cross-functional and multicultural greenfield mining & operation projects preferably in Africa
• English Speaking with intermediate French desirable.

About the Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.

Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
