About the role
The implementation of Modern Enterprise Resource Planning (MERP) is a critical step in Rio Tinto’s transformation journey, moving from outdated technology (ECC6) to a new, digitally enabled lean core platform (S/4) and application ecosystem. As this is a business led, Group-wide transformation effort, it requires a strong team to bridge the business and technology landscapes. From contract to cash, every aspect of our operations will benefit from this modernization that offers an exciting opportunity to deliver a digital foundation that will stand Rio Tinto up well for ongoing digital transformation. Rio Tinto is looking to deploying a modern ERP as core and supporting Best of Breed / Best of Suite technologies across processes.
We are seeking for an experienced and strategic Manager – Platform, Design & Delivery (Move and Sell) for the Modern ERP programme team that supports our global Commercial function. This role is responsible defining and leading the functional design of systems and solutions that meet business requirements as part of modernising our digital core around SAP S/4HANA.
As a key leader in our Information Systems & Technology (IS&T) team, you will collaborate with business leaders, functional owners, and external partners to ensure our platforms are aligned with business objectives and deliver measurable value during the Realise and Deploy phases.
Reporting to the Senior Manager Functional Delivery, you will:

Provide end-to-end ownership of the platforms to support the asset management function, ensuring stability, security, and performance.

Lead and mentor a functional design team, fostering a culture of collaboration, inclusiveness, and continuous learning.

Oversee platform enhancements, change and release management, and compliance with IT governance and audit requirements.

Manage vendor relationships and ensure quality of delivered solutions meets business expectations

Identify opportunities for system optimization and ensure platforms remain current and compliant.

Technical Leadership: Lead the technical design efforts for new systems, features, and enhancements, ensuring alignment with business needs and system capabilities.

Requirements Analysis: Collaborate with business analysts and stakeholders to understand functional and non-functional requirements, translating them into technical solutions.

Solution Assurance: Validate detailed functional and technical design documents, ensuring that all aspects of the architecture, including data, application, integration, and security, are well-defined and optimized.

Stakeholder Management: Engage with cross-functional teams, including product management, development, QA, and operations, to ensure that design aligns with both business and technical expectations.

Collaboration: Work with developers, testers, and DevOps teams to ensure successful delivery of the technical design, guiding them through the implementation process.

System Integration: Lead the design and integration of new systems and features into existing architecture, ensuring minimal disruption and optimal performance.

Agile Participation: Participate in agile ceremonies (e.g., sprint planning, retrospectives), contributing technical insight to ensure designs meet iterative development goals.

Quality Assurance: Collaborate with QA teams to ensure designs are testable, scalable, and meet quality standards, participating in code reviews, and design validation activities.

Continuous Improvement: Stay up to date with the latest technology trends and continuously improve system design and architecture, introducing best practices, tools, and methodologies.

Documentation: Ensure proper documentation of the technical architecture, system components, integration points, and dependencies to support development and future maintenance.

Risk Management: Identify potential technical risks and challenges, developing mitigation strategies to ensure project success.
What you will need for the role
To succeed in this role, you will have:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field.
-
7+ years of experience in technology roles, with at least 3 years in a technical design leadership position.

Strong understanding of software development lifecycles (SDLC), particularly agile and DevOps practices.
-
Proficiency in system architecture, design patterns, and integration methodologies.
-
Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and microservices architecture.
-
Solid understanding of data modelling, database design (SQL/NoSQL), and integration patterns (APIs, web services, etc.)
-
Knowledge of continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines and automation tools.
-
Experience with various development frameworks, languages, and tools (e.g., Java, .NET, Python, React).

You’ll join the Modern ERP Program within our Manage Sales function a multi-disciplinary team bringing together technology, process, data and change specialists to reshape how work happens across Rio Tinto. We’re modernising a 20-year-old ERP system and redesigning core business processes to improve safety, efficiency and innovation.
This work will make it easier for people across our global operations to spend less time on transactional tasks and more time on the work that really matters. By simplifying and digitising how the organisation runs, the Modern ERP Program is creating the foundation for future productivity gains, smarter decision making and AI enabled transformation across the business
